Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 07, 2009 3:30 pm We're thinking of buying a 1930-ish house in one of Perth's western suburbs, but it needs renovating -- especially the kitchen bathroom. We'd be interested to hear others' tales about how much things ended up costing. The house is on a small (about 300sq/m) block, and the rooms are small to medium. We've heard that 30k is a fair starting figure for a kitchen, for example.
Cheers -- in anticipation! Craig. Re: How much were your renovations? 3Mar 07, 2009 9:27 pm Helyn I think 30K would be a very generous budget for renovating a small to medium size kitchen. Yeah I agree that would be enough. Built the Atlantique 37 Mk2 with Carlisle Homes - WE'RE IN!! My kitchen $7500 + white goods. Bathrooms completely DIY $6000 each. A bit of a "length of string" question - It really depends on the scope of works - a nice (good) kitchen reno can start at $12 - 15K including trades but that would be removing (and disposing of) the existing kitchen and replacing it with another (Locally Made) one in the same footprint...if you are going to remove/relocate walls, move services such as gas and plumbing, upgrade the electrical and/or ducting, re finish floors, re sheet walls, the costs can easily get to $30K without a lot of the outlay even being visible in the finished product. If you are in a position to put $30K aside for an entire kitchen project then you are pretty well sure of getting a decent outcome at one level or another - if you have this amount just for a new kitchen with no peripheral work then it should be a very nice kitchen...in my opinion anyway. Re: How much were your renovations? 7Mar 08, 2009 8:16 pm My kitchen came in just under $20000 and that was for 2 pack cupboards (square profile), granite benchtops, ducted rangehood, electric stove top, wall oven, microwave with trim kit, applicance cupboard with roller door, dishwasher, two bowl sink with accessories (timber cutting board, drainer etc), also repainting of kitchen and dining room walls, tiling of splashback. Not included is the new timber floor (because we haven't decided what to get yet). The kitchen company described my kitchen as "quite large" in terms of size. I also had a big of extra electrical work done at the same time (installation of ceiling fan, plus 5 new external lights).
I was happy to get all this for $20000 but the big savings came from the fact that my husband and I removed the old kitchen ourselves (and sold it). Also by getting an excellent deal with the electrical applicances (all from one supplier) and probably the fact that I paid the electrician, plumber, painter and kitchen installers in cash (they turned up on time, every time). My stove, microwave, oven, rangehood are all stainless steel Blanco, dishwasher is LG. We used the 'spare money' from the sale of our old kitchen to buy a stainless fridge with water/ice maker in it. Hope this helps, Angie Re: How much were your renovations? 8Mar 08, 2009 10:57 pm Thanks everyone... very interesting. I'm afraid I would have a limited capacity to reduce the cost by doing some of the work -- not an area of strength! And yes, it is a bit of a 'length of string' question, but it's it's geat to hear people's real-life stories. Nice counter-point to slick websites and brochures. Cheers, Craig. Re: How much were your renovations? 9Mar 09, 2009 10:01 am I completely renovated our small post war for $40,000. Full internal and external re paint, roof paint, ceiling insulation, air con, new deck, new laundry, bathroom , kitchen, new fittings through out, built in wardrobes, polished floorboards, landscaping. Just to give you an idea on what you can get for $40K.
Admittedly i did a lot of it my self and being a cabinetmaker, have mates with their own businesses that certainly helped. My kitchen cost $7000 plus white goods and it was quite a big kitchen and all drawers which are more expensive. $30, 000 is a lot and you could expect a very, very nice kitchen for that sort of coin.
