Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 01, 2009 9:18 pm Hi everyone,
We have just brought a house with ACTIVE termites!!! Yes we my be mad, BUT it is a full brick house on a excellent block of land There is one beam under the house that needs replacing, but other than that the house is fine (according to the termite man and building inspector). However they could not inspect the inside of the walls as we didn't own the house, lets hope there is no damage!! They are "NASUTITERMES SPECIES" does anyone know much about this species of termites? There is a MASSIVE nest in the front yard in the tree and they are all in the wooden fences. We have had M&M out and they have placed bate pots around the house and near the fences. It has been 5 weeks and they still say they are active, but they are going to the pots which is a good sign. I guess my question is... people who have had termites, how long has it taken to make them "non active" and any other advice on when to start pulling down the fences and working on the house ?? Re: Any people with advice on Termites? 2Mar 02, 2009 8:36 am Do your best to not attract them back when repairing - replace the fence with treated pine or steel. With any timber beams/ framing members you need to replace, use termite treated timber only (its only about 10% dearer than normal pine) Re: Any people with advice on Termites? 3Mar 02, 2009 3:09 pm I had a pest exterminator check out my place following white ants being found in the fence (which my idiot neighbor then poked at with a screwdriver) he told me a few things about these little home wreckers.
IF you see a mud trails, remove part of it, and even if they are in the roof they will soon die, because they cant return to the nest as they must every 24hrs. Also Ive poured sump oil around my fence posts and dribbled it in between the pavers and the foundations because according to him they wont cross oil. Keeping free standing cupboards far enough away from walls to regularly inspect behind etc He also told me of an elderly couple who never used their spare room where he found a large mud trail behind the never-closed curtains. This is what I did for quite some time after I had white ants. I just kept knocking the lead down. It took a good 2 weeks or more for them to die within the walls, and many phone calls to my pest guy checking when they would die! Ahhhh White Ants…..I’m all knowledged up now thanks to that scare! Don’t disturb them; leave them to die, except to knock their leads down. If it was a lot of them, then yes they will take longer to die. I never knew about breaking their mud trails! I was told under no reason am I allowed to touch anything to do with the termites. It has been 6 weeks now and we STILL have active termites!!! must be something to do with the massive nest in our front yard Not active in house so that is good, still very active in wood fence and garden though. The termite guy has been coming out every 3 weeks to check the pots and every time still active. Should it be taking this long, and will they all die? A question. Im in Queensland and building a new home. We managed to reach practical completion 6 weeks ago but we haven't heard any date for handover yet.
