Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 23, 2009 11:58 am Hi! We are renovating and have rendered our house but now need to choose a colour to paint the house. The roof is black (tiles) and the windows are black frames as well.
The garage door is Colourbond Dune. The Dulux colour consultant I used suggested that I paint the house in Dulux Calf Skin with the courtyard wall out the front in Dulux Ploughed Earth for contrast, but the sample pots I got make the calf skin look quite pink. She also suggested an alternative of Dulux Mud Pack on the walls, but this is much darker than I had intended to go. I am amazed that although Calf Skin and Mud Pack sit next to each other on the colour atlas, on my walls they look so far apart. I need something to go with the Dune on the garage door which is at the front of the house, but I want to stay a light colour because the roof and windows are black and the courtyard wall out the front will also be nice and dark. Any help is much appreciated. I think i have spent about 30 hours trying to come up with a paint scheme! My husband is sick of all the colour talk and has told me to make a decision ASAP. reply 2Feb 23, 2009 5:43 pm Since none of the colour experts have replied, I thought I'd give it a go.
You will have a lot of dark colours, so I think to 'soften' the look, you should go with a contrasting colour, like one of the light ones the consultant was talking about. It won't look effective if it has an all-dark scheme, it's good to balance it out. Find a colour to match your roof tiles and gutters and the Dune. Many members tend to match Colorbond colours to Dulux or whatever brand, so you could have the Dune garage, with Surfmist or Merino render or something? Just letting you know you can tint Dulux into Colorbond.. as Colorbond colours are made to match.. The facade will look nice with a contrast and matching with garage door and gutters and fascia etc. Hope that helps you out a bit, but I'm no expert. Is it an invasion of privacy if I show you on google maps? It's already on google maps, I guess not :P http://maps.google.com.au/maps?ei=F2OiS ... 7527457731 Re: I need help to choose render colours 4Mar 25, 2009 7:49 am I was looking at painting my house Dulux Calf Skin too - I didn't notice any pink in the colour at all, just a bit concerned that it looked too light in the sun. I'm also considering going with Mudpack - but you're right KF, it seems very dark. Dilemma! So what have you finally decided on for your render colour KF? Re: I need help to choose render colours 5Mar 25, 2009 2:48 pm Hi and I sympathise with you. I have just picked my outside render colours ... I went through 14 sample pots!! While my choice of colours is not what you are after, my experience in finalising my decision may help. Even though you think the colour is dark, when it is in the full sun, they are so much lighter. Maybe you could paint up a board and take it outside ... see it in daylight. If you have any wall built yet that you could paint up would be great too. It is such a big decision, I hope it all works out and you find the right colour. (I do know what you mean about the pink look, we moved away from a colour for that reason, it looked quite pink in daylight .. in fact most of the colour was washed out) when in the sun) the colour we ended up picking looks so dark on the paint chart but so different when outside. Also, have a look at the Dulux colour Missouri Mud (or was it Missisipi Mud) my memory is shocking!! That was along the lines of Calf Skin, but darker. Re: I need help to choose render colours 6Mar 31, 2009 12:39 am Hi KF, if it makes you feel any better I had to choose render for our entire exterior (large single storey house with portico) that was just finished being built last year. I had to do it blind from overseas and was not able to get any sample pots or see any consultants all I had was the internet until the lovely Michelle (interior designer) happened to see my thread and posted me an A4 size colour sheet for Dulux Jodphurs. We had already decided on a black tile roof, black garage door and wanted a lighter creamy contrasting colour, something that would be elegant and classic and not date. I had to wait until the house was finished before I even saw the result and we couldn't be happier with it. The next challenge down the line is to choose a contrasting colour for the portico but that will be easier to do in situ....Anyway, thought that would help. There was a house built near ours that also had black roof and garage door and had chosen a nearly white render and it does look quite stark....Anyway good luck Re: I need help to choose render colours 7Mar 31, 2009 7:57 pm Brisvegas Can I just ask...what colour are your windows then? I'm having an awful time choosing the colour for my aluminium windows. I, too, am having a creamy/beige colour for my render and a black roof. cheers mozzi26 Re: I need help to choose render colours 8Mar 31, 2009 9:05 pm Hi Mozzi, I chose white as was originally going to go with black and then considered how that might look internally so went with 'can't go wrong, classic white'!!! As it goes was very happy that we'd done that however have also seen windows in black which look great too but do show more dust.....hope that helps Re: I need help to choose render colours 10Apr 01, 2009 12:44 pm You're welcome. How far along are you with your building, I do remember your 'name' but don't remember the details! As far as the windows go, I don't think you can go wrong with white and it's such an expensive mistake to make if you decide you don't like the black it'd not like you can just paint over it!! Re: I need help to choose render colours 11Apr 01, 2009 6:27 pm Yes, I've been sneaking around these forums for about 2 years in the lead up to the inevitable renovation/extension time - all starting tomorrow. I finally decided on Anodic Off white. I thought Pearl white was a little too stark. Hope I made the right choice, as like you said 'you can't paint over it'. You know, it's probably been the hardest thing to decide on! I am looking for someone who might have tackled a similar issue as me. I have a few rendered interior walls, the surface condition is hardly flat. I can see all the bumps… 0 5745 Anthony Firstly, wow you have put a lot of work into your list of questions! Great job and they are mostly valid questions that a builder should be able to answer. As… 14 9097 |
