Thats a 3 step but i'll probably only go the 2 step. Re: Stepped cornice anyone? 7Feb 22, 2009 11:11 pm we got a price to upgrade from the standard cove 90mm cornice to a New York cove 90mm for the living areas only.
Our builder quoted us an upgrade fee of $1,500 - we nearly fell of our chairs! This was clearly a rip off because the better cornice material for the living areas would have only costed "retail" an extra $250 approx. So we raised this with our builder only to be told that they use Boral for their supplies and installation and it was Boral's price increase, not our builders.... hmmm we thought, that's a big increase for no more time to do, no more skill required to put up and no more materials (other than the cornice $250) etc... so I actually rang Boral and said what's the go. They said the tradies charged more when they could (eg any upgrade request). They said Boral didn't add on any money to the upgraded quote (the builder said they put on about $200.) well, I'm afraid the tradies outpriced us on a basic upgrade that would have not increased their time/effort in the slightest - we were right PO'd... But I know a lot of other people on the forum paid a lot less than we were quoted, so ask your builder to upgrade??? Annie A thankful person is a happy person. That sucks, as you say cornice itself is dirt cheap to buy so to upgrade to a fancier profile cant cost that much more and the labour is essentially exactly the same. This is one of the reasons i'm glad we are building our selves. Bloody volume builders and their variations.
I'll speak to my father in law (who is our builder) and get the number of his plasterer tomorrow who will no doubt answer the financial variation side of things. Anyone have any practicality issues that might be turn off?? the only thing i could think of was that maybe they provide a better nook for insects to build a house / web in. But my wife is pretty anal when it comes to cleaning so they wont have a chance to settle in Re: Stepped cornice anyone? 9Feb 23, 2009 6:02 am wake_me Yep, thats the stuff. We went for the Boral Cairo Cove (4 step) in all the downstairs area and upstairs living area. All the bedrooms we went for the basic One Our builder did not charge us anything for this. Annie We had it put in our last house by a family friend tradie, he said that it’s actually a fair bit harder to install then standard cornice, so maybe that’s why they are charging more to install it. Re: Stepped cornice anyone? 13Feb 23, 2009 11:37 am Yep, that's mine - I really, really love it! It's weird looking at that photo on a screen, then looking out at my walls and seeing...the exact same thing! I like the 2 step, too! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Stepped cornice anyone? 14Feb 23, 2009 11:38 am Seems relative to the thread, so does anyone know where to get the square edged cornice used in the 70's and early 80s? Everyone does Scotia now
Not the stepped stuff like above but cornice with a plain right angle and squared edges. Hey Steph, we thought maybe that too, but we were assured, even by Boral, that it wasn't any harder! Go figure... A thankful person is a happy person. If not they are just being lazy and i would ask someone higher up. Its just substituting one product for another and unless you have a 100sq. house and they had to order the stuff from khazakstan especially for your job then it shouldn't be a big deal. Re: Stepped cornice anyone? 18Feb 27, 2009 10:53 am I just check my 2007 contract, AllCastle charge us $1295 for upgrading to the 4 steps Cairo cornice for the whole ground floor (except study, bathroom & laundry) and first floor for center living area.

I think it's the corner part that's a bit more complicate, plus the painting as well... But the builder can easily come up hundreds of different excuses. Even if in most of the cases, their sub-contractors wouldn't increase the price that much, they still charge you a lot for any minor changes...
