Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 21, 2009 9:21 pm By taff We ended up puttting these little cut outs in the wall they are 500m x 800 by 90m deep. Regret not making them deeper now but its too late to do anything about it. The only other choice I have is to get rid of them all together. But then I have wasted money having power connected to them, there is going to be a small down light in the top of each one. What should I do If I keep them what could I put in them as they are so narrow in depth. Some ideas would be great! I will most prob paint this wall in a cocoa colour as a featur wall also. The recess in the middle will house a plasma. Also do you think the down lights could be a distraction when watching TV? Then the downlights are appropriate too. Maybe don't put downlights on when watching TV, so make sure their downlights are on a separate switch.

Try to build a fame that just sits in there flush and cover it with material. Mount a slim line flouro in there and hey presto, instant art/lights and wow factor. Re: What to do with these cut outs????? 7Feb 22, 2009 6:53 am We like cutouts with mirrors in them, but I don't think that would work in this situation (with downlights etc). They would be positioned perfectly for a sculpture of some description, but 90mm may be too thin. Previous posts suggesting pictures or paintings sound like that way to go. Re: What to do with these cut outs????? 8Feb 22, 2009 7:26 am I'd paint the cut out in a striking colour, then add some of those really striking wall decals. Instant, cheap art that's easily changable.
I personally wouldn't put pics because I wouldn't want me or my family looking back at me while I watch TV. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick reply 9Feb 22, 2009 9:47 am Hi,

Those cutouts would be hard to work with because of their depth, but if you do something like artworks and a splash of paint, it will look good. Everytime I look at them they bug me I think what makes it worse is because they were an after thought. What happened was when the recess was made it was only 300 deep so we decided to put another stud wall in front of the previous one to make it 390 deep. The annoying thing is that I know theres another stud wall behind them that we couldnt utilise. I wanted to cut into that one too so that they would have been 180m deep but by then the electrician had wired up and the studs were supporting things. I think its mainly the depth of them thats annoying me, plus the fact that my eye may be drawn to the features when watching the plasma. DH isnt impressed either. Because of the extra work already involved I think I may as well leave them, otherwise I will have to pay more again for the plasterer to redo the walls and cover them up and also the electrician to remove all the wires! Maybe when Its all finished I will feel better. But if their bugging me now I hope it doesnt continue evertime I look at them Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: What to do with these cut outs????? 11Feb 22, 2009 11:38 am We have several feature niches that depth. Two have downlights in the top, one doesn't. As long as your lights are switched separately, there's no reason they'd be a problem - you just turn them off when you're watching TV and turn them on when you want to highlight whatever feature is in them.
Of course, if it's a home theatre and you'll only be using the room to watch TV, then maybe the lights aren't so useful. We put glass shelves in two of ours (the other is wide and not very high), with the plan of displaying some decorative odds and ends. I'm still looking for the perfect pieces, but I'll find them. You can put anything you like in them - vases or urns, pretty glass thingummies, candles, artwork, whatever.... Re: What to do with these cut outs????? 12Feb 23, 2009 5:02 am Thanks Guys
I went around some display houses yesterday to see if any had niches. I saw a few the same depth as mine some had prints hanging in them and they looked nice in this depth, so I feel better now and have decided to keep them I have a few ideas and decisions to think about. I could hang prints then paint the whole wall a feature colour, or I could just paint the back off the niche a different colour or the back of the niche and recess a different colour to the front of the wall. Or I could line the backs of the niche with glass and have glass shelving in and display small glass ornaments,(glass on glass nice ). I have to decide if I want a feature wall as the painter starts on Thursday and I am allowed 1 feature wall in my house price. Other wise I could wait till I move in and get a "feel" of the place before I decide what to do.
