It seems to be the thing everyone stuffs up a bit first go.
I thought I'd start a thread to give ideas on where you should put power points and light switches. I won't cover lights as they are personal taste.
Power points. (GPO's in sparky speak)
Think of your furniture.
Do you want power points hidden or easy to get to?
Where is the chrismas tree going?
Points for the vacuum cleaner.
Lamps
Can you family room furniture move around, if so where will the tv go if you move it around.
outdoor power points for vacuuming the car, lights, bug zappers.
battery chargers in linen cuboards
extra kitchen appliances
mobile phone chargers
In wardrobes for kids appliances.
I would recommend a Gpo just inside the bedroom doors. good as an extra but also good for vacuuming. easy to get to and will do the halls too.
Light switches (light switches in sparky speak)
think about how you would walk around the house.
place them in easy to get to spots. eg just inside doors or hallways.
for family rooms, can you bring all the switches to one plate. eg, family room light, outdoor lights etc. I have one light switch panel next to my family room switching dining, kitchen, family room, and two outdoor lights.
bench lights in the kitchen should be switched on the bench.
Use motion sensors (if the budget permits) A motion sensor is the same amount of labour to install as a switch and costs about $50 extra. I use motion sensors in hallways, linen press, laundry and walk in ward
