Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 17, 2009 8:57 pm I quite like the clean look of having no ceiling architraves, of course we would be getting skirting architraves.
My parents have build many houses without ceiling architraves and I think it gives a more modern, cleaned lined look. Does anyone else not have ceiling architraves? Re: Ceiling cornices or not? 2Feb 17, 2009 9:09 pm ceiling architraves, or cornices?
Either way, I like the clean lines of the square set look (no cornices or architraves (architraves being the ones around the doors and windows)). I think it's an upgrade with most builders as there is more work that has to go into them. In fact I'd like no skirting boards too! So far our ones are just dust catchers! Re: Ceiling cornices or not? 4Feb 17, 2009 9:15 pm Yes I meant ceiling cornices, lol. You can tell I'm new to this game
With my builder they are standard. Mmm, now I'm thinking maybe about not having skirting boards either, I bet they are just dust collectors and I too love the clean lined square look. We'll be having tiles through out minus the media room which will have carpet. Can you also not get them around doors/windows? If it’s a little on the heritage side, cornice skirting and arcks are needed to pull the look in. Thanks for that link, I will email my builder tomorrow and see what he can do. That is exactly the look that I'm after Re: Ceiling cornices or not? 10Feb 17, 2009 10:12 pm Loulabelle Thanks for that link, I will email my builder tomorrow and see what he can do. That is exactly the look that I'm after Not a problem I have seen it in a local display home before and it does look impressive. I am sure your builder would prefer to use Shadowset vs Squareset plastering as the use of a 'cornice' helps with all the little joins around the edging. Re: Ceiling cornices or not? 11Feb 17, 2009 10:14 pm So if I have no cornices and skirting boards and go with the gyprock shadowset, can I also not have architraves around the doors and windows too? Re: Ceiling cornices or not? 12Feb 17, 2009 10:20 pm The unit I'm curently in has square set ceiling, no architraves, no window stuff and no skirting boards. It looks very nice. The unit has rendered walls an carpet.
I'd like the same on my upcoming house, but since I'v got timber floors, I'll need skirting (or is there an alternative)? EG your going to kick that more solid wall and not plaster, it keeps stuff off the walls. I personally wouldnt want a house without them, as you will get more plaster damage over time from stuff not protected by them. Re: Ceiling cornices or not? 14Feb 18, 2009 8:27 am wow that shadowset cornice looks very nice! I've never seen that before!
We are getting square set cornice is our main entry/hallway. I'm actually not that much of a fan of them, they look abit unfinished for my liking. but we thought we would put it in the entry/hallway so it makes the house higher and grander! It will cost us $600 Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: Ceiling cornices or not? 15Feb 18, 2009 8:36 am Quote: Skirting board Ive always taken as a protector more then anything. That's a good point, although I don't go around kicking my walls much Skirting boards do mean furniture isn't sitting right on the wall and rubbing against the paintwork - I guess you must lose a tiny bit of floor space as a result though. One way to deal with this is to have your plasterboard finish say 10cm above the floor, then have skirting boards below that which are flush with the plasterboard. You would have a very small expansion joint between them. This is non-standard work and requires skilled hangers and plasterers. JB Re: Ceiling cornices or not? 17Feb 18, 2009 12:57 pm My Dad and I did squareset on his owner-built home. As a relative newbie to plastering I found it challenging but definately achievable and people have commented on how good our plastering was! I also like the look of shadowset, I noticed a few examples around the office here. I'd definately recommend those over regular cornice Re: Ceiling cornices or not? 18Mar 13, 2009 11:16 am Square sets can look great in large open spaces. We were quoted $700 to do square set cornices for all living areas for a 33sq home.
Opted to have cornices in the bedrooms to keep that cosy feeling. Re: Ceiling cornices or not? 19Mar 13, 2009 12:15 pm IMHO the "squareset" looks unfinished and untidy.
