Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 15, 2009 4:40 pm Hi, I hope someone can help?
I have been fitting new oyster lights to my ceiling have done 4 and have two more to do. However when I took the last two batten fixtures apart one has 4 condutes of wireing three with three wires red, black and green and one with two a red and a white?? all joined with matching wires except the one with two which are joined and go into the fourth wire hole of the batten fitting. The last light has three condutes of wireing with three wires in two of red green and black and two wires in the third one of white and red. The first 4 lights I have done had only one condute with three wires of the standard green earth, red and black. I can't fit all three lots of wireing through the hole in the fitting, is there a way of tieing off some of the wireing ??? and only using three wires as I have done. or how can I wire the new light up successfully?? Thanks Re: Wireing for ceiling light fitting 3Feb 15, 2009 5:18 pm Hi Emerson,
Bit of DIY electrical eh?? well hopefully I will be able to help you. I am going to assume that you are extremely aware of the safety issues associated with electricity and you have ensured that circuits are not only turned off but are actually dead before proceeding??? On that assumption lets tackle each bit at a time. Emerson one has 4 condutes of wireing three with three wires red, black and green and one with two a red and a white?? The one twin cable (red, white) will got to your light switch, active will travel down to the switch which is usually the red core and the white (switched active) will travel back to energise the light globe. At a guess I would say one of the 3 core cables brings active, neutral earth to the fitting another 3 core takes active, neutral and earth to the next group of switched fittings and the final 3 core takes the now switched active, neutral and earth to another fitting that is to controlled by that particular switch. This is a guess we will need to confirm this...read on below. Emerson The first 4 lights I have done had only one condute with three wires of the standard green earth, red and black. This is because the work of managing the switching, which is done by the two core cable (white, red) has been done at your other fittings already so all that was needed was to take the switched active, black neutral and green earth to the next fitting that needs to be controlled by that particular light switch. Emerson all joined with matching wires except the one with two which are joined and go into the fourth wire hole of the batten fitting The fourth hole in the battern is called a "loop" connection which basically means it is a place to connect all none switched active wires as they will be live at all times that the circuit breaker for that circuit is on. Normally the circuit active will be joined with the 2 core (red and white cable) red wire using this loop terminal then the white wire will go into the active of the battern which inturn connects to the globe. The loop has no circuit or path to the globe it is simply there as a convenient point to join wires. Emerson I can't fit all three lots of wireing through the hole in the fitting, is there a way of tieing off some of the wireing ??? and only using three wires as I have done. or how can I wire the new light up successfully?? Use a junction box in the ceiling space and use the connectors that normally come with the box to join the wires then get an off cut of 3 core (red, black and green) and connect the black to black, green to green and red to the return from the switch (which is usually white) then connect the other end to the light fitting as you have with other ones. Now there is a clause with all of this.....the red and white are just copper wires at the end of the day and either will carry electricity quite happily although they are colour coded there is no guarrentee that your original eleco made the red one the permanent active and the white the switched active it could be the other way around....which will also work so you really need to post a detailed account of how the wires are connected at each of your fittings so we can be sure. It goes without saying that all the blacks will be joined and all the greens will be joined so unless something bizarre is happening and that isn't the case don't bother posting that info just the reds and whites are of interest. Any electricians here please help. 1) Will the Fan need separate switch to ON/OFF/Speed eventhough it comes with Remote 2) how about… 0 1218 Hi - thanks for your reply. Yes I think 'Ill go for whitish with very speckly bits rather than pure white something like this.
