Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 06, 2009 3:50 pm I brought a kelvanator invertor air condition december 2007 with 5 year warranty .we had only use the unit for 6 weeks over the summer period
so we only had the unit for only 13 month's, begin of summerthis year I had put the air con on and it wouldn't work so we call electrictian in to find out what was wrong he had removed the steel tray from the out side unit and found that MICE HAD CHEWED ALL THE WIRES were we brought the unit the manufactor said that it was not covered then we rang our home insurance and they don't cover insect and mice so we have lost out on $1800 now we had to buy a new air condition what a waste of warrantY and what do we pay insurance for so angry what would you do Re: I thought I should pass this on insurance and warranty SCAM 2Feb 06, 2009 3:56 pm That sucks rustygirl - sorry to hear you are having so many problems.
I had an issue recently that I was sure would be covered by my contents insurance, only to be told that it was not.. I often wonder what I am actually getting for my yearly premium, apart from the runaround!!! Re: I thought I should pass this on insurance and warranty SCAM 3Feb 06, 2009 5:03 pm Surely a good electrician can rewire it for a few hundred dollars. Re: I thought I should pass this on insurance and warranty SCAM 4Feb 06, 2009 5:16 pm thlo Surely a good electrician can rewire it for a few hundred dollars. I agree. The condensor and motor etc will be fine - and I would have thought most of the wiring. Just some point to point stuff to do. Or maybe buy a new wiring loom from the manufacturer. the problem is they can't get the haness(wire) they can get the boards for $600.00 but no wire there is one guy that can do it but he wan'ts $1200 to fix it and if the board stuff up in 3 months Iam up for another $600 and the is no warranty so the best way is to buy a new unit for $1500 and get 5 year warrenty and cover the holes the one thing I have learn't is that Iam paying 1800 a year on insurance and if a mouse eat the wiring in the ceiling and end up in a fire and my house burns down Iam not covered acording to anz home insurance Re: I thought I should pass this on insurance and warranty SCAM 6Feb 06, 2009 9:16 pm rustygirl,
Now that you've got me going ... let me tell my 2 cases last year that made my blood boil Winter last year, suddenly the R/C A/C wasn't putting out warm air anymore. Only 3 years old (5 years warranty) so I rang up. First question they asked .. did you get it professionally serviced EVERY YEAR? Er no. "Well, in that case, it's not covered by warranty". A few weeks later, gas hot water suddenly stopped working. Checked warranty cover ... 2 months outside the 2 years warranty . Got it fixed. A component has failed (not because of corrosion nor wear and tear). Then I thought, I should be able to claim this on house insurance. Their response .. "Sorry, since it's not a motor failure, we don't cover it. If it was a motor, then we would have covered it". What's the difference whether it's a "motor" or not?? Chris Re: I thought I should pass this on insurance and warranty SCAM 7Feb 06, 2009 9:34 pm ChrisL A few weeks later, gas hot water suddenly stopped working. What's the difference whether it's a "motor" or not?? Chris The difference is that with insurance, there has to be an "event". If there was a power surge that caused fusion of the motor in your air con unit, for example, you'd be covered - if your policy has that inclusion (fusion is usually an optional extra). The power surge is the event in that case. If a piece of space junk fell out of the sky and broke your hot water service, you'd probably be covered for that. In your case, there was no event....the hot water unit just stopped working. So there's no grounds for claiming on your policy. The appliance might be a piece of rubbish, but unfortunately, if you're out of time on your warranty, you'll have a hard time getting anything out of the manufacturer. Sucks, I know... Re: I thought I should pass this on insurance and warranty SCAM 9Feb 12, 2009 8:31 am Some insurances have different levels of cover - just like health insurance. For instance with mine I could chose basic or premium. The difference is that premium covers for accidental damage - ie the kids stick toast into the DVD player it would be covered whereas under basic cover it wouldn't be. Premium also covers things taken outside of the home - ie a bike taken for a ride into town along a bike track and is stolen - this would be covered under premium insurance coverage.
Not sure whether mice / rat damage would be covered as well but you should take the time to phone around a couple of insurance companies and make comprehensive inquiries into what is covered and what isn't. Not that a new insurance company is going to be able to help you in this instance as it is a pre-existing problem. And to the question "Why do we pay insurance?" - just take a look at what is happening in Victoria at the moment. Bet you the people that have insurance are feeling a little more comfort then those who unfortunately didn't. Whether it is health, car, business or house insurance I wouldn't be without it personally. Some things are worth waiting for. Hi All, I just wanted to close this topic out with an update.
