Re: Need Advise on Cutting a Doorway through a Brick Wall 3Feb 11, 2009 11:13 am Not a job for the beginner. I've done this before with a mate, almost certinaly not to code and I would not recommend anyone really undertake this but fairs fair, I did it so here's how we went about it. removed morter above where door top would sit and added a steel section to support the bricks above the door. We used a combination of a petrol powered brick saw, sledge hammer and motar saw to remove the bricks where the door would stand. We used a steel trimmed door carcas as we werent too secure in the knowledge that we'd strengthened the area enough and secured that to the bricks and filled the gaps appropriatly. Took a weekend and made a lot of mess but we put french door through double brick and it looked a treat.

i know it will be fun and a lot of mess, i am assuming you take out the morter, and slide in the steel support, then cut out the door way. Re: Need Advise on Cutting a Doorway through a Brick Wall 5Feb 11, 2009 11:23 am Oh yeah make sure that puppy is in there before u do anything else, what is going to hold the bricks above the door up if its not in there!?
Maybe have a qoogle about, heres another forums with information, just an example, there are plenty of thread out there if you look hard enough http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=46356 Re: Need Advise on Cutting a Doorway through a Brick Wall 6Feb 11, 2009 1:55 pm The process above seems to be lacking detail, just remember that this double bricked wall holds up your roof, and the reward for failure could be death. I would seriously recomend you have a qualified professional do the job. If it was a non supporting wall, my tune would be different.
If you absolutely have to DIY, then you will need an independant support holding the weight of the wall and roof whilst you mess around inserting concrete or steel section lintels. Step 1 is take out 1 brick from each side above where lintel will be placed, slide a strong steel beam through hole and support each side of beam with a jackable stand (jack up tight against bottom of both bricks). Im a little unsure of the rest of the process. I have meerely mentioned step 1 to show that there is quite a bit to it. Take a pick with a level sittingo n the slab and a pick with a level sitting on the sill please. This will help us diagnose the issue and therefore a solution. I can see all the bumps… 0 7967 yep sounds good make the footing bigger to to allow for the pipe in the middle 3 7326 |
