Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 15, 2007 11:14 pm Has anyone had home window tinting?
Is it worth it? Does it add to the security of the home? I'm interested to know more about it. Regards Tinting 2Feb 16, 2007 4:30 pm We had our sun room windows tinted recently. I think it was worth it for the reduction in heat and privacy in the day. You can see out but no one can see in. We have 11m of windows and it only cost around $800 which I thought was pretty reasonable.
I'm not sure if it adds security to the home except it does stop people being able to see in. Secure 3Mar 10, 2007 2:21 pm Thanks Janetcbell
I thought there was a film you can get which makes it hard to break the glass. I will investigate and post my findings! Regards Re: Has anyone had home window tinting? 6Mar 13, 2007 9:17 am We had window tiniting applied on 4 windows in our house that do not have external shutters on them (window in external door, sidelight windows by front door, and a couple of long skinny windows in the family room. The main reason was for security, we didn't want to put grills or mesh on the windows so we went with 3M ScotchGuard tiniting. The added bonus is the glare and heat reduction which is quite noticable.
When choosing your tiniting spend some time shopping around. There are a few different types of "security" tints available but some are made "secure" by simply making the tinting thicker which to me gives everything you see thru it a yellowy blurry look. The 3M was extremely thin and clear (even the tinted version) and rated to a higher strength then any other security tints I saw. Also, if you are getting windows tinited for security reasons think about how the window is set into the window frame. There is no point in having unbreakable windows if the entire window can be levered out of its frame with a bit of effort. We got our 3M installer to replace the rubber seal around our windows frames with a black flexible rubber sealent which essentially glues the window into the frame on the inside, making it much much harder to remove. Most recommeded. The blog of my home being built: http://glint-bladesong.blogspot.com/ Thanks 7Mar 15, 2007 1:04 pm Thanks Glint
Very helpful info. Have been getting told all sorts of promises from suppliers but sounds like yours was done correctly. Who did you use to get it done? Regards Re: Has anyone had home window tinting? 8Mar 16, 2007 7:59 pm I was considering using laminated glass, in particular Lamguard; http://www.pilkington.com.au/building+products/householder/home+security/default.htm for my new home. Don't know what the cost is though, particularly compared to security tinting (would like to know what that security tint cost Glint...).
The problem with tinting is that unless the edges of the tint are bonded/glued to the window frame someone with a little patience could break the glass along the edges and drop the glass out (in one piece). It's arguable how many crims would spend that amount of time but it's supposedly a possibility. Re: Has anyone had home window tinting? 10Jun 03, 2008 1:49 pm There is a product on the market which you can apply yourself comes in a roll can buy from paint stores and hardware shops, it can be tint, different strengths or frosted or leadlight etc etc, we are doing up an old weatherboard and plan to use it so i can keep you posted, there is a website or number you can call they send you samples to view i recieved these and am impressed, for us its not about security but the side of the house that cops the afternoon sun, bedrooms!! And the front rooms 1 will be a beauty salon so I am putting the stippled variety in the two front windows for privacy, you cannot tell it is a film from the exterior of the house it looks like the glass.
Anyway if your interested i will look for the info so you can investigate. Re: Has anyone had home window tinting? 11Jun 03, 2008 9:13 pm bec does anyone actually have windows tinted (or getting them) and is so which tint did you choose? Not sure if your talking about tint that you apply, or tinted glass. The north facing and front facade windows of our house under construction has tinted glass. Aside from the thermal and visual benefits, the glass itself is thicker than standard glass, so it also results in a quieter house. The colour is a default grey, to match house trims etc. Here you can see the difference between tinted glass in one of our north facing windows, and standard glass in a window that will forever be in the shade in the outdoor room. Its very good for reflecting the sun and saving your carpet and furniture. No one can see in during the day - must go out tonight and see if it is still blockout with the lights on. I'd certainly like to see the results of this - might do our alfresco doors with it to get privacy from the neighbours behind us. Paula, did you check if people could see you from the outside last night? Yes, you can see straight in when the inside light is on!! Better make sure I draw the blinds down. I drive past this one place in Sunshine in Melbourne and there is this one place that has all lights blazing at night down stairs (large windows on 2 sides) that allows people to see right in... I don't think they realise? Looks like I will need some extra coverings for the alfresco then...shaded blinds perhaps...
