Can't really feel too sorry for them though, yep they had some major health problems which was not good at all, but you can't feel sorry for somebody who can spend that much money building a house! It just didn't have the WOW factor that I thought it would. final episode in this series or forever????..... Re: Grand Designs is back 83Aug 05, 2009 8:39 am Well I must be soft cause I felt very sorry for the family last night. After he'd spent so long designing it and was obviously very passionate about the project to look so unhappy and be thinking of selling I thought was so sad. The place will look awesome when it's finished and I can imagine what it would have been like with rounded glass panels. What an amazing view! I loved the staircase. The wife was totally OVER it, that was obvious. Think the financial strain was too much. I think that she didn't really like it before it started. Lovely house, but ruined te streetscape. Hate to have to furnish it...and that motorbike,,uuugghh. What about cleaning it!!!..... ditto on the bike. Never mind cleaning, think of heating/cooling it. Insulation, etc wasn't mentioned even once. True, the glass panels were IGUs, but that's not much. Anyway, it was a sad example of ego and ambition crashing into reality. I felt sorry for that bloke even though he had only himself to blame, and the wife, they both aged years in those 7 months. Edit: Just watched it on iview. hmm I would have loved to have seen it with the curved glass. Not my kind of house but i like it more than the one from last week or the previous farmhouse. Liked the little topiary plants balls as you walked up to the front door. AND I had to grab screen captures of that ball light. I want one! and urgh to the motor bike. hmm maybe if it had been a flattened motorbike. yes i know the space can take the depth of one... nice to see something with a big splash of red but not into motorbikes on my walls thank you. she looked exhausted. Re: Grand Designs is back 89Aug 13, 2009 3:04 pm After catching the last 1/2 of the most recent season we bought season 5. All I can say now is I'm so glad we didn't have an architect! The number of bullying architects that take advantage of the owners and try and push what they think over want the owner wants is a bit scary. All I can say now is I'm so glad we didn't have an architect! The number of bullying architects that take advantage of the owners and try and push what they think over want the owner wants is a bit scary. I agree, it seems to happen quite a lot on grand design homes There was one episode where the owners tried to go 'green' including the slab and the whole slab fell apart costing them an unbeliveable amount of money. The architect was 'experimenting' on their house and got really hostile when they wanted to use 'normal building products'. She was pushing her own agenda on someone's elses build. We went through an architect and you really need to be in control of your project from the start. Our costs could have escalated into a frightening figure if certain design features had of been allowed. (In saying that, he was terrific and stopped many of my grandoise (sp) ideas) Friends of ours have just built an architect designed home...large expanse of glass, tall voids, amazing roof line etc and have almost been financially ruined by the build (and he is a builder) all due to the design by the architect...all those features as nice as they look can add up to over a 1 million dollar build. This is how budgets blow out...I really think home owners get caught up in 'the look' and forget about everything else. I love the show...kevin is still very strange and has this uncanny way of insulting the home owners that is hilarious I remember him saying to these very proud owners....'the shower looks like a giant elephant pis$ing' got to love kevin! oh, also, nobody tells the truth of how much their build actually cost btw they always look away when he asks the question. Mrs B Re: Grand Designs is back 92Aug 14, 2009 8:59 am Mrs B - the experimental slab is in the season we just bought. It also has one where the arctiect goes experimental with an 78 yo lady doing a build and costs her double what they promised. I'm still surprised she didn't die of stress! themax - not totally sure what season was just on tv but I think it was 7?
