There seems to be quite a number of thefts from houses that are un occupied, what about from occupied houses in new estates - has anyone heard much about these kinds of thefts? Unbeleivably so, Nexus!!! As Ed said, it's all built into the price you pay for a new house, too! Our (timber AND aluminium ) windows were delivered and sat there for 6 weeks due to the incompetent SS we had at the time That was when we were actually having a bit of rain, too... Then he had the audacity to say "Oh, if those were on an Estate in C'bourne (ie any new Estate) they'd have gone overnight! " Lucky for him, none of that disappeared! The only thing we had pinched was the internal door handles, which the new (good!) SS had actually hiddden in a cupboard when he went on site. Our neighbours were very vigilant in watching out for the place - even when we turned up, they'd have a llook to make sure it was us! So, it had to be someone with access....I think I know who it was..... Frustrating for everyone, isn't it?! If I saw someone pinching your windows, Ed - or anything from a building site, I wouldn't hesitate to dial 000! If they were in the know they would not have broken in as there wasn't anything to steal. On the contrary, the concreters & chippies finished well before xmas. Now they wouldn't have a clue that the electricals, etc.. hadn't been installed yet. He asked for his leftover bricks to be put to the back of the site. They were... the next morning they were gone.
Where we are building....... the house a few blocks down from us had the spare bricks piled at the back of the block. They are actually in now... still with out fences, and the bricks are still there. That makes me really happy to know that's the type of area it is. My partners car was smashed in a car park and two people left descriptions of the car and even the rego, but because the police couldn’t contact the witnesses their was nothing they could do except go around and ask the people if they new anything about it and of course they will deny it. Ended up costing us $1400. Re: Theft of Windows - Update - Mernda Village Drive 27Jan 30, 2009 8:12 am So if there's a huge amount of materials stolen from building sites, where is it all going ? Who's using it, and how can we detect what's stolen ? (It can't all be going into the thieves backyard projects). Do the hard jobs first. Tel. 1800 326 326 Re: Theft of Windows - Update - Mernda Village Drive 29Jan 30, 2009 10:16 am When my last house was being built, the only item we supplied - the spa for the ensuite upstairs - was stolen about a day or two after I dropped it off.
The theives wrenched it out of it's wooden frame, breaking the pvc plumbing underneath it, and somehow managed to get it downstairs via the stairwell that HAD NO STAIRS! Had an argument with the builder due to the spa not being covered by his insurance policy as he didn't supply it (a fact that we were not made aware of when he initially suggested we supply the spa ourselves), the result of which was that he agreed to pay for half of the replacement cost. However, The theif/theives got caught trying to sell the thing for a song down the local pub (yep) and we got it back! Had to cancel the order for the replacement, but we got them to check the original one once we got it back and after 1 very small crack repair all was tested OK and that spa is still installed and in use there today. It caused a few scratches and a dent (actually it was a super, super windy day and I was getting my son out of the car seat and the wind blew the door wide open). Anyway, it was still my fault! I left my name and number on a piece of paper and slid it under their windscreen.
It wouldn't be right if I had just left. On the other hand, someone scratched my car the other day with their keys and left! Grrr... I used to work in retails, and theft is sooo common, we sell expensive merchandises and one theft could cost us $100 or more. Yeah, my boss has to cop it, which is not fair! Re: Theft of Windows - Update - Mernda Village Drive 32Jan 30, 2009 12:52 pm George and I saw a carload of people attempt to park, and completely hit the side of the parked car! it was TERRIBLE! Dint the size of a basketball, no paint... They finished parking and waited in the car for awhile (we were hiding behind a pillar watching) and after about 5 minutes they drove off and parked somewhere else! So we left the rego and car details
My car has been hit on both sides of my rear bumper (dints, no paint damage) and my drivers side front bumper (paint damage) and the worst part is that it happened at work! There's only 15 people who park down our side too. Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Theft of Windows - Update - Mernda Village Drive 37Jan 30, 2009 3:43 pm One good thing about our build being so slow was that we had several neighbours move in long before our house had any materials that were easy to steal ****** around.
We still had our water tank pump stolen out of a cupboard. The tradies were hopeless at securing the place. We used to com over every night and find doors and windows open. And the entire street had their water meters stolen shortly after they were installed. Vacant land, nobody around at night.... apparently there's a gang that goes around new estates pinching them and selling the copper. Again, it wasn't our problem, but you can bet the cost gets passed on by the water authority in our rates. Oh, and they replaced our nice shiny (stolen) new meter with a crappy old one. My husband rang and complained yesterday and they're going to replace it with another new one. Cos it's important to have a bright shiny water meter....
