Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 27, 2009 10:50 pm The house we've bought is about 100 years old, high ceilings, ornate ceilings, floorboards etc, the bulk of the house is great, but the back end is a disaster area. We want to add an extension on at the back which will have a kitchen, bathroom, laundry and living area.
Does anyone know any websites that have good images and ideas for extensions. We want to keep to the old style, no modern stuff. We are a few years away from doing the addition, but it's really difficult to find ideas. I tend to have to scour the real estate ads for ideas because nobody seems to have any images of old style house renovations for ideas. Also, if anyone has done an extesion in Adelaide of an old home, can they recommend any decent builders. I find alot of the houses in our area have the additions, but they are modern, therefore after 5 or 10 years they look really dated, so I figure I may as well keep everythig looking to the old style and it shouldn't date as much as the modern stuff. Anything that was reno'd in the 80's or 70's just looks terrible, and all the ones that have been reno'd recently will look terrible in 10 years time. So hard to find inspiration.... At last someone who appreciates a good design when they see one As a bit of reading have a look at some of Ian evans books to help you along with ideas etc. Ian Evans Old Houses - most libraries have them. Various books for each period. and here is the sort of reno you area after. http://www.archicentre.com.au/DesignGallery/periodrenovation/index.htm Nicely done IMO Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Steve Re: Renovating and old home in Adelaide 3Feb 05, 2009 8:14 pm Thanks for that Yak, that's pretty much what i'm after, but i don't want floorboards in my kitchen / living, but the ceiling roses, the frech doors etc, that looks spot on. i'll hunt down the ian evans books and see how i go. Re: Renovating and old home in Adelaide 4Feb 05, 2009 9:38 pm can you post some pics of the house might give us some ideas on what you are after.
I myself just extended on a 80 to 100 year old house and the one tip I can give you is don't compromise with the small stuff, ie the light fittings, power points ceiling height they are not a huge cost compared to everything else but make a huge difference in the finishm, if it continues the houses theme I'd even delay getting done if you don't have the money to cover those little things, because you would regret otherwise. Re: Renovating and old home in Adelaide 5Feb 06, 2009 7:00 am Hey Zeeeb, always great to see another renovator on the forum. As you may know my place is a little younger than yours, 1930s. It is a challenge to renovate properly and to find inspiration. One thing I do is scour realestate.com.au for open inspections on similar properties to mine that have had renovations. Have a look at the pics and then go along to the open inspection. http://www.oldhouses.com.au/ I love old houses. New are nice too - but old holds history - so do them justice. Re: Renovating and old home in Adelaide 7Feb 08, 2009 8:41 pm Yeah, i have been going to the opens of the houses similar. i keep finding lots of what i don't want, and not much of what i do. i find most of the homes for sale have modern extensions. and the few i've seen that look good, also look like they've cost a lot more than we would be able to spend.
i will try and take some pics, i only have some pics before we moved in, and there was that much of the previous owners junk, you can't see the house for the junk Re: Renovating and old home in Adelaide 8Feb 09, 2009 11:32 am Yak_Chat Colsy - keep it period - detail detail detail - and as AFC says - hold back on the glitz and do the bits that matter. http://www.oldhouses.com.au/ I love old houses.
