Re: Spiral Cellar 17Feb 14, 2011 11:39 am I dind't think spiral Staircases where legal in Australia anymore with the current building regulations? Re: Spiral Cellar 18Feb 14, 2011 2:52 pm Get around doesn't make it legal though does it? Do you have provisions for ventilation in case someone or thing gets locked in? Re: Spiral Cellar 19Feb 15, 2011 1:15 pm Just thought I would try and clear up a couple of misunderstandings above. My uncle actually has one of these Spiral Cellars and so I know quite a bit about them. There are only a couple installed in Australia so far but they do comply with the Building Code of Australia, as a staircase to a non-habitable room only needs to meet performance requirements and can be exempted under BCA 3.9.1.2 One of the unique features of these cellars is that they utilise a passive air ventilation system (essentially just two pipes) which creates an airflow into the cellar drawing warm air out and allowing cooler air in. This, along with the thermal mass of the surrounding earth, keeps the cellar at a constant temperature and humidity. The trap door fits flush with the surrounding floor level so there is no trip hazard and because they can be closed and locked they are safe from kids accidentally going down the stairs Re: Spiral Cellar 20Feb 15, 2011 1:25 pm There are a few in my local area but none have been imported. I don't see the point. Just custom make them suit if you have enough coin to buy a ship load of wine to fill them. BTW how much did your Unc pay for his? more than an arm and a leg? Where you are coming from is where you are going to... |
