Re: Not another floor plan thread (or poll) 6Jan 15, 2009 1:38 pm Well, since I BUILT exhibit A, you'd think I'd vote for that one. But honestly, if we'd had a big enough block and the extra $$, I'd have gone for the version with the games room.
Except I'd pick the Bridgeport 38, not the Sandhurst 36 or whatever it is...same basic floorplan, but unlike Joles, I hate galley kitchens. And I think it has a powder room? http://www.porterdavis.com.au/content/Houses/Bridgeport/Floorplans/Bridgeport38.pdf If you do pick the Sandhurst, check where they place the return air for the heating....in the display, they've moved it to where it's a great big eyesore, visible as you walk through from the front door. Ours is tucked around the corner in the hallway, out of sight. Re: Not another floor plan thread (or poll) 7Jan 15, 2009 1:50 pm Galley kitchens have no corner cupboards which equal wasted storage space and awkward corner benches that are unusable!
Galley all the way. First and only non-negotiable design must have for me! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Not another floor plan thread (or poll) 8Jan 15, 2009 1:51 pm You do know your floorplans kek
We've seen your blog and we really had our minds set with the bridgeport 2 months ago. But last week we realized that for just a little more we can have the Sandhurst with the games room, powder room and slightly bigger bedrooms. We're confident that it will fit our block but we have already done our tiles and color appointments. Tender is not until mid-February though. Re: Not another floor plan thread (or poll) 10Jan 15, 2009 2:51 pm kek unlike Joles, I hate galley kitchens Completely agree, I think they're terrible. Despite that, I still think "B" is the better house. Any chance of putting a sliding or bi-fold door across the entry to the bedrooms/games area. That way if your kids are like mine then you can just close the door and not worry too much about whats left all over the floor. Re: Not another floor plan thread (or poll) 13Jan 15, 2009 3:47 pm I'm not a fan of galley kitchens either, I think kitchens are better without any walk thru.
The ensuite in A is better, actually I love that ensuite design with the toilet tucked right away at the back behind the WIR, B's ensuite has the toilet backing directly onto the bedroom wall, very close to the bed. They're both very big houses; I'm laughing at the his and hers BIR's - hers is considerably bigger in each one!!! Re: Not another floor plan thread (or poll) 14Jan 15, 2009 4:19 pm Without doubt, floorplan B!
A has too many weird angles. B has a better kitchen. The minor bedrooms look better in B...all separated by one room or another, whereas they look a bit bang, bang, bang - all in a row in option A. Plus the added benefit of the extra games room! So B for sure! Helyn, you hit the nail on the head - my issue with galley kitchens isn't the layout from a work or storage perspective, it's the damn TRAFFIC coming through when I'm cooking. I almost went nuts in the rental, because not only was there a galley kitchen, but it was in a direct line from the front door to the hallway leading to the kids' bedrooms. Whoever designed that should hang their head in shame.... Reaver, whichever one you choose, you'll love it. I wish we could have squeezed in the 38 (the Sandhurst wasn't available when we were making our decision), but finding our block was hard enough, there simply wasn't anything bigger in the right place at the right time. So far, we're managing in "only" 35 squares. Sometimes we lose each other... Re: Not another floor plan thread (or poll) 16Jan 15, 2009 5:57 pm I don't think this kitchen has that issue. The galley kitchen in plan B has two entrances... it's not a walk thru... it's two different things.
Check what the kitchen guys have to say, it's unanimous amongst them..... this from another thread. Strumer Galley kitchen galley kitchen galley kitchen! Any variation on that layout would be my top choice...what a suprise... Cheers, Earl I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Not another floor plan thread (or poll) 17Jan 15, 2009 6:09 pm Oh well, Strumer's opinion aside, I still prefer a kitchen with one entrance and prefer the kitchen of plan A - not neccesarily other factors of it.
My personal preference is also for kitchens with their own window rather than these 'land locked' ones in the middle of the house - there again I am in the minority , most new houses tend to have the kitchen in the middle with island benches Re: Not another floor plan thread (or poll) 18Jan 15, 2009 6:14 pm Which way is north?
Also just a question about galley kitchen: My kitchen will have only one entrance but will have no corners. So a walkway in between two benchtops with all your cupboards and stuff obviously. So is my kitchen counted as a galley kitchen??? Re: Not another floor plan thread (or poll) 20Jan 15, 2009 6:20 pm Here is a picture of my kitchen:
