Helyn - Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: What changes would you make if you could build another house 82Feb 19, 2009 11:34 am petal Yours might look funny, but mine don't!!!!!!!!!! neither do mine!!! And they certainly don't look cheap! I did forget about the sliding them over all the time to fit things in different sides. Mine aren't full enough to worry about this yet! With my laundry cupboard, if I didn't have sliding ones I wouldn't be able to fit a cupboard in there! Surely not having a cupboard there at all would be more horrifying to you Jo? Re: What changes would you make if you could build another house 83Feb 19, 2009 11:35 am I think it's back to my co-ordination problem. I've never met a sliding door that will stay on it's tracks. My current wardrobe drives me crazy.
And I like to look at everything at the same time. I love, love, love hinged dooors!!! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: What changes would you make if you could build another house 84Feb 19, 2009 1:15 pm We have cavity sliders on the kids toy room - double ones that I can open up fully and keep an eye on them whilst I am in the kitchen / dining / living area. Our powder room in the laundry also has a normal door into the hallway but a cavity slider into the laundry - so as not to encroach on the laundry space. Then my two linen cupboards both have sliding doors as do two of the smaller bedrooms and we also have a built-in cupboard (as well as our dressing room - good Lord I cannot wait to have all this storage space ). I did ask if we could have cavity sliders in all of the kids' ensuites but the builder said that it would create a problem further down the track with weight of tiles etc? So all the ensuites have normal opening doors. The only specification DH had was that no wardrobe doors were to be mirrored - he had them growing up in his bedroom and absolutely detests them. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: What changes would you make if you could build another house 85Feb 19, 2009 3:47 pm I just changed my linen cupboard doors to sliding doors mainly because doors would block the hallway and after thinking about it 2 sliders would suit me better than 3 hinged. Also having glass sliding doors in the bedrooms, except ours. I have never had a problem with sliding doors, they work to perfection. I am over the mirrored ones though, they just get dusty and fingerprinted. Re: What changes would you make if you could build another house 88Feb 20, 2009 6:37 am Since i had experience in the trade,
these are the things I DID change, Custom designed the house. I hated walking into a rental house and knowing exactly where everything was because there were not many differing styled houses. Hinged sidelight for easy access for furniture. (custom made) widened hallway to main area. Raised ceiling to 2700 (don't really need A/C now) Soundproof HT and Master bedroom widen garage (could do with more) Raised benches. extra kitchen storage in an alcove in the dining room (like a buffet but built in) Added fully tiled and lined alfresco. Walk in linen attic ladder. MASSIVE double shower with seats/ steps/ shelves enclosed ensuite toilet raised shower heads eaves all my sparky goodies. little extras like upgrade door handles, toilets and taps. I changed all the doors in the house to match the front door in style except the ensuite and wardrobe doors. Licenced Sparky and Data Cabler If "The Data Guys" is too long to type, TDG will do. New on the board, looking at building and read this thread with interest. Below is a summary of most of the points you all raised (added a category). Lessons learned is a great thing. I've gone thru this myself and made them A,B,C priority in terms of yes, must have, maybe or not fussed. My plan to start with is, I have it in a spreadsheet, prioritised and there will be one for each design/builder I like. I can then check off what are covered as standard inclusions, what are upgrades vs add-ons, what value when they offer freebies (i.e. the freebie might be nice n all but not that important) As I move thru looking at houses I will gain knowledge about each one as I go so when it comes to really committing to the house I should be as ready as I can be. When their is a lot to do, too much info, overwhelmed, best approach is to start and take it from there. My approach is to list things and refine it later. Today we plan to fall in love with at least 3 house designs and come home bubbling with excitement. Will we buy any? Hell no, part of learning and throwing ourselves at it while we can i.e. without having to commit just yet. Yee Haa!! Re: What changes would you make if you could build another house 93Mar 01, 2009 10:42 am very exciting, good luck looking. hope you come back and tell us about the ones you love, we will all be happy to poke holes in the floorplans for you to help you decide! Ive got those silly cube bowl basins and i hate hate hate them
I have to stand on tippy toes to clean my teeth and having big hands ( not me) is a night mare Wonder if its to late to get PD to pull them out as they where a up grade and i don't think any thought went into them. THESE ARE THE BASINS IM TALKING ABOUT Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Any way other than that would have had sliding doors from the rumpus family and lounge room. replace the small eating area window with a door for easy access to the courtyard. Re place some of the kitchen cupboards with slide out draws. More power points and relocate light switches. junction boxes for outdoor lights IE front back and side of house for future lighting .or just gotten the builder to put outside lighting in. Aircon. swap the guttering colour (Paperbark) to the windows and the window colour to the gutters. Cant remember the color name. I suppose you cant think of everything and requires money Re: What changes would you make if you could build another house 96Mar 03, 2009 2:42 pm What i would have done differently is have normal vanity basins.. Extra double power points everywhere Extra TV points (bssically one in lounge, home theatre and activity area) although I think this isn't an issue these days as you can get some wireless TV signal sender thingy anyway? Extra phone points (one in office and kitchen and somewhere else?), once again not that essential (wireless phones) but it could be if one has to use dalup. Huge Mirrored wardrobes in two of the rooms (instead of two half sized walk ins) to maximise usable space Two sets of double french doors opening from dining to alfresco, instead of one sliding door and one large window. Awning windows instead of sliding ones (only sliding window is the kitchen one ) Longer island bench with extra draws and a built in wine rack (basically two sets of 4 drawes - I always run out of draws in a kitchen!). Extra external tap since the house is so long (one at each end) The house already has a walk in pantry and double fridge freezer space (which can hold seperate fridge and freezer if necessary). It has seperate toilet in ensuite and has a bath in the main bathroom (yaay). Things I might regret: The big sliding mirrored wardrobe doors - will the kids get sick of looking in the mirrors, will it make the rooms too bright, will I need to clean all the time (hmm yes) and sliding wardrobe doors are a pain! But they will look good:? I don't think I would change anything really, perhaps win the lotto so that building such a big and nice house wasn't as demanding on the finances! We basically chose the house plan to suit the orientation on the block and the views and of course to suit our ideals and also future sale. We probably could have comfortably built something smaller but it wouldn't do this rural block justice. The building process has been really slow and dragged out, I suppose in hind sight maybe we would have considered more carefully what time of the year we started building (ie not winter in the SW), but no real regrets it's all in the experience!!
