Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 13, 2009 9:26 am We have a rear verandah that doesnt quite extend to the end of the house and are considering what to do with it as it is just wasted space (there used to be a water tank before we moved in). We are thinking about maybe building a deck level with the lawn & retaining wall and making it into a bbq area or something.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Do you have to jump off from the lawn area? [sneakersss] Re: Wasted Space - what to do with it 3Jan 13, 2009 9:33 am YSSIM How do you access that space? Do you have to jump off from the lawn area? We don't really access it at all at the moment - that's why we were wondering whether a deck level with the lawn would be possible - at theast that way we could use the deck for something and storage space underneath. Re: Wasted Space - what to do with it 4Jan 13, 2009 9:40 am Fair enough. Cos I was' going to say I'd move the clothesline there. One of those foldable, wall mounted ones. But then I thought about how you would get there with a basket full of wet clothes. So, ignore that idea.
You could also put in one of those smaller sized sheds to maybe store the ladder and bikes. Or a waterwank if you don't have one or want another one? Or vegie patch? Re: Wasted Space - what to do with it 7Jan 13, 2009 10:01 am I'd make it storage space and make the access from the current verandah.
You could extend the verandah and put doors behind the spa... (that is a spa isn't it? )... then it would be a big storage area. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Wasted Space - what to do with it 8Jan 13, 2009 10:28 am I would build a timber deck level with the lawn then wack a garden shed on it. Have a timber ramp over the water pipe to the shed.
Also take out some of the garden bed near the fence and put in a set of stairs off the timber deck so you can use underneath the deck for extra storage. Re: Wasted Space - what to do with it 9Jan 13, 2009 11:18 am Rain water tank...Need water??
Trampoline....Got kids?? Sand pit.....Got kids?? Outdoor shower / bath....Any inhibitions?? Veggie patch.....Enjoy Gardening?? Extend the rear verandah to include this dead space...Got money?? Pat. Re: Wasted Space - what to do with it 10Jan 13, 2009 11:31 am I'd probably just extend the undercover area and whack the spa down the end in the current wasted space. That way more room for entertaining in the undercover area. ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: Wasted Space - what to do with it 11Jan 13, 2009 11:51 am I would definitely be extending that verandah to the end of the house. It would get rid of the space and it would look better too. Then move the spa to the end if you like or leave it where it is and eventully build a deck/seating/dry off area area around the spa. 'We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.' - Winston Churchill Re: Wasted Space - what to do with it 13Jan 13, 2009 12:38 pm I would extend the verandah also and maybe put a bar or sauna down the end.
Or I like the trampoline idea. You wouldn't need to dig out underneath just have trampoline level with grass. I think extending is the go - pity we only put tha twall in 6 months ago - don't know why we didnt just extend at the time.. Also the bar idea is growing on me - now to convince the wife!!! Re: Wasted Space - what to do with it 16Jan 13, 2009 12:51 pm Sounds like some great ideas Colsy and Tam!!
Can you take the wall down in one piece to reduce the amount of work? Cant wait to see the pics! Just make sure that the bar is well stocked with the wife's favourite drinks! It'll get passed then!!! Re: Wasted Space - what to do with it 17Jan 13, 2009 2:13 pm I dig the bar behind the spa idea as it will make the spa area much more attractive. I have never really been a fan of spas as they often sem to be just 'plopped' into a space with nothing around them.
But I reckon if you extended that verandah, leave the spa as is and then put in a bar with a few barstools with a TV coming off the wall, drink shelves up behind etc you would have a really attractive spa area that would mean more than just jumping in and out of the spa.....it would become a 'room' of its own in which people would actually like to hang around in. Yes, i am with the Spa idea. 18Jan 13, 2009 2:44 pm I thought that was picture of a Spa i could see. I would be moving the spa to the space and putting a deck around it so you could just walk straight into the spa. Giving the Spa its own area, i have one and as said it looks out of place just plopped on the pergola floor. I am renting at the moment so i can not do anything other than just put on the pergola floor. Having it tucked away in the corner also gives you the help that hopefully it is not in full view for your neighbours to see. Re: Wasted Space - what to do with it 19Jan 14, 2009 11:09 am Thanks for all the great ideas. I am hoping that maybe we could move the wall in one piece and then extend from there. I have seen pics of a great little bali hut type bar that I am pretty confident I could build myself so that is definitely an option. Will speak to the other half and see what we can work out.
The main problem I have at the moment is that we have so many little (and some large) projects we want to do with the house and we need to prioritise them all.. And then find the time and money to do them!! 6 11528 You can really use anything you want the main consideration would be how it looks once painted/finished - or the look you want.
