Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 11, 2009 4:56 pm We have just had our ceiling fans installed in our bedroom finally. Only problem is the light is so dull it's not funny. We didnt realise when we got the fans that it specified a 60W globe. I would like to know what are the consequences of putting a higher wattage globe in them (ie 75W?)
My wife is not happy with the light and as all the married guys know, a happy wife is a happy life so I need a solution..... Re: Ceiling Fan with Light - Way Too Dull 3Jan 11, 2009 5:41 pm Casa2 What about putting in a 15W (or so) CFL. No chance of overheating. Is this one of those globes that has the white light? Do they come with the screw connection as opposed o the bayonet type? Re: Ceiling Fan with Light - Way Too Dull 4Jan 11, 2009 7:30 pm Yup they come with both small and large caps in both screw's and bayonets.
They also come in different styles that help to fit them into older style lamp casings. Building Upside down house in Wantirna VIC Current Stage: Procrastination... it's just all too hard.... We have one in our bathroom (average-sized bathroom, so a small room) and it's GOING. I can barely see my reflection in the mirror....
I've never had more than a 60w globe in bedrooms, as a super-bright light isn't usually required. Although if your room is large, it could be a bit dim. Check with the manufacturer whether the fitting is rated for a maximum of 60w before you go sticking anything with higher wattage in it. Perhaps you can add some lamps for extra light? Re: Ceiling Fan with Light - Way Too Dull 6Jan 11, 2009 8:23 pm Would it be possible to put a higher wattage (ie more than 15W) CF globe without causing problems of over heating?
On the inside of the pyster light part of the fan it says max 60W Re: Ceiling Fan with Light - Way Too Dull 7Jan 11, 2009 10:19 pm McReidy Would it be possible to put a higher wattage (ie more than 15W) CF globe without causing problems of over heating? On the inside of the pyster light part of the fan it says max 60W Yes, you can put in a larger than 15W CFL. The CFLs are not that expensive. Why not start with a 15W and see what you think of the light level. If it's too dim, work your way up, but I cant see you going above 30W which is still well below the allowable power. The older style CFLs are quite bad, but I've seen some new ones (not sure of wattage though but definitely not the HW type, cause they are much bigger) that shine like the proverbial sun! http://www.lrc.rpi.edu/programs/NLPIP/l ... igure1.jpg Re: Ceiling Fan with Light - Way Too Dull 9Jan 13, 2009 11:38 am Just a quick update to all that helped in this thread. We ended up buying a couple of Philips CF globes (24W) and it has definitely solved the problem of dull light. HOWEVER.... The globes are the spiral "tornado" kind and they are so big that the oyster light cover now does not fit on the light!!! Bugger
Having said that the wife is happy that she can now see what she is doing in the mornings when applying her face Re: Ceiling Fan with Light - Way Too Dull 10Jan 13, 2009 2:31 pm Lighting seems to be such an issue in homes of today.
Many of the display homes they we have visited and many others have commented on have terrible lighting even in the middle of a Queensland Summer day. Others on the flipside are lit so much that you can just see the dollars disappearing in all the electricity costs. Are we not creating light and airy homes these day's? Re: Ceiling Fan with Light - Way Too Dull 11Jan 14, 2009 11:06 pm hey, as an electrician i ask you NOT to put anything more than the 60w that is specified, i have seen way too many incidents where people have done this (put higher wattage globes) and the cables have started to burn out and harden up, plus burn out the fitting, eventuali it could cause a fire....i had to change a light today because this had happend....not a good idea.
60w should be enough usuali but if not then i suggest something else, like mayb add more lights or get the energy globes as people have suggested Re: Ceiling Fan with Light - Way Too Dull 12Jan 15, 2009 8:06 am Mr Smith hey, as an electrician i ask you NOT to put anything more than the 60w that is specified, i have seen way too many incidents where people have done this (put higher wattage globes) and the cables have started to burn out and harden up, plus burn out the fitting, eventuali it could cause a fire....i had to change a light today because this had happend....not a good idea. 60w should be enough usuali but if not then i suggest something else, like mayb add more lights or get the energy globes as people have suggested Hey Mr Smith. Thanks for the advice. Is it OK tyo have a 24w CF globe installed? Is there any risk in this overheating? Re: Ceiling Fan with Light - Way Too Dull 13Jan 15, 2009 11:21 am 24W CFL is okay. However, you mentioned that you can't get the cover back on. You may have to go a bit smaller in wattage to get a bulb that will allow the cover to be put on and give enough light.
Also, the 23W/24W spiral bulbs vary a bit in size and some are substantially smaller.
