Re: Your opinions on this please (brickwork) 22Feb 01, 2007 9:14 am Excellent news on the brickwork! The blog of my home being built: http://glint-bladesong.blogspot.com/ Re: Your opinions on this please (brickwork) 23Feb 01, 2007 5:27 pm G/day Peter,I've been onto your site a few times and found it really well done and interesting.I've also noticed your posts on the Woodwork forum where I"m a very occasional contributer.Regarding the window sills (or lack of them),I have briefly worked in Perth (but only for a few weeks to help my nephew set up his bricklaying business,)and almost every house in the sub-division that we worked in did not have normal ( brick on edge here)window sills. Some of them corbelled out one course below the frame and then stepped back in under the frame. The brickmakers supply pressed solid bricks to use in this way.The couple of houses that did have brick-on-edge sills looked silly as the bricklayers had given them about 80 or 90mm overhang so I suppose they weren't familiar with normal practice.I'm sure that you (as a designer)would find some of the methods very interesting as I did.
They told my nephew not to use flashing under or over door and window frames,no dampproofing material (addictive in motar) no expansion joints (no movement in WA they said) I told my nephew that I would pay for flashing etc for the time I was there but they wouldn't cop putting in expansion joints. They also start the house from the outside (completely the opposite way we do on solid brick houses)Raft slabs have nowhere near the amount of steel or beams that we have here and they are all solid brick. As for roofing, almost all the roofs are "pitched"on site as opposed to trusses (in fact two of the carpenters I was talking to had never used trusses and they were well into their 30's)All the internal walls were plaster set "white set"(great finish)And last but not least most of the drive ways were brick paved. All very interesting to me.Regards Terry Re: Your opinions on this please (brickwork) 24Feb 02, 2007 1:15 pm Hi all,
Any comments on this brickwork ( Austral Bricks - Drysdale Flush natural motar) http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t272 ... 04708c.jpg Not cleaned yet and thanks its not everywhere like this on the house. Kwhy Re: Your opinions on this please (brickwork) 25Feb 02, 2007 3:12 pm Greetings 'Terry from Wagga Wagga with the backyard fireplace' - it's a small world.
My other half usually reads through the forums to pick up ideas. I thank you for the info on W.A. but not for increasing my list of things to do, after posting the pic's of your fireplace ! I got turned around with my last post & meant to ask the question to 'scoofy'. It's Michelles fault - these interior designers . . . I don't know Thanks for the info Terry & I hope the info on the AusDesign site was helpful. Re: Your opinions on this please (brickwork) 26Feb 02, 2007 5:03 pm Hello Peter,I thought you meant the question for scoofy but as my name was on it and I have worked in Perth recently(and I am a bricklayer by trade) I thought I'd answer for (her, him?)I'm glad that your wife liked the fireplace.(hope you can lay bricks?)I put a couple of pictures of two other fireplaces we did with the same recycled reds on this site recently but I think it was in the wrong place.I'll try to move it here so you can see the other two.We just finished a large homestead style house on the river and it also has a brick fireplace but I don't have a picture of it as yet.So as you can see we are still putting a few in although most fellows in other areas tell me they haven't done any for years.Regards Terry
Previous post: Hello Benni,I noticed that you have a site on outside fireplaces.I found it very interesting.Outdoor fireplaces and wood fired ovens are very popular at the moment in this area,We have cold winters here and it is great to have a fire going when enteraining. I built one under our pergola area and have enclosed a picture of it if you are interested. The old recycled red bricks were left over from two previous fireplace projects that we completed a while back. They were in The Wagga Winery and The Shanty Hotel. Both are just outside Wagga. http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/7558 ... ty12mo.jpg http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/7201/w ... box4bp.jpg http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/9966 ... ce23uj.jpg http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/833/firebbq1gt.jpg Regards Terry Re: Your opinions on this please (brickwork) 27Feb 07, 2007 1:10 pm I don't think the problem was with the camera, but with the position of the sun - almost directly overhead. Look at the table and see how the shadow is almost exactly underneath it. Tiny imperfections will get magnified by this.
