We just bought a Dyson upright. First ever upright.
My mum loves it because she doesn't have to bend over... much easier on her back.
With the wand... which in effect works as a traditional vacuum.... the stairs are a breeze.

Now I'm no expert on vacuum cleaners and don't use them that much..
so this may be a silly question.. but why do you need to bend over on a barrel vacuum? Ours is barrel and the few times I have used it I haven't had to bend over as it has a telescopic wand thingy and the barrel just drags along behind. To turn it on I just use my foot.
