Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 24, 2008 1:12 pm Hi guys,
Long time reader, first time posting. I'm embarking on my first home purchase in the new year, and need to do some work on it. Some of it I will need help though... I'm just wondering how much labour costs these days? For example, lets say I was going to get someone to come in and build a deck for me. How much would the labour cost?? I've had some big numbers quoted to me from friends, but wouldn't mind hearing from others. Thanks! Re: Labour Costs? 3Dec 30, 2008 11:08 am Friends? Suggest to get at least 3 quotes, don't just rely on friends.
We got a electrician friend to do some of our lights work and later we found that he charged us higher than the market rate.... Lost money and friendship after this for sure... That sucks mate! I do plan on getting quotes, I'm just trying to get an idea of labour costs. All good though, I can sort that out when I get to that stage... Re: Labour Costs? 5Dec 30, 2008 12:56 pm For Building works you can typically work on $65 an hour as a base rate.. More specialised jobs like sparkies and plumbers will charge more...
In terms of tiling, I have no idea why tilers charge "per m2"... And why that price doesn't vary dependant on tile size bugs me to no end! Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Re: Labour Costs? 6Dec 30, 2008 1:21 pm If builders are making $650 a day or over $3,000 a week I am going to change jobs, 150,000 a year would be very tasty
If you want a good guide to to the Archicentre website they, list current trade rates across the board. Cheers Re: Labour Costs? 7Dec 30, 2008 8:12 pm hunts01 If builders are making $650 a day or over $3,000 a week I am going to change jobs, 150,000 a year would be very tasty Cheers From that, subtract your super, income protection insurance, workcover premiums, etc etc etc besides the other things not covered by materials charges such as fuel and travel. Good luck! Re: Labour Costs? 8Dec 30, 2008 9:39 pm and you might be at work 10 hours a day, but you spend a few hours stuffing around driving or whatever so its not $65 for 10 hours..
would you belive the award rate for a fully qualified carpet layer is.. $16.50 an hour why the hell would anyone bother to do a 4 year appship to get 16.50 an hour ? i get more working nightfill at bunnings than that. After 6 hours training not 4 years ! Re: Labour Costs? 9Dec 31, 2008 6:25 am A simple ball park to work out over all labour cost to work out material costs.
Roughly speaking when building a house 50% is labour 50% is material. Some trades charge less(concreater) then the material cost however many charge more. Say plumber electriction, painters, Re: Labour Costs? 10Dec 31, 2008 6:53 am Thanks heaps for the replies guys! So, basically $65 an hour, though it can vary. Ouch! It'll be interesting to see how much the costs vary if/when I get a few quotes in! A friend of mine from work was paying $1000 a day in labour costs, but this was for 4 guys. So $250 a day each I guess, just over $30 an hour for an 8 hour day... which doesn't look too bad compared to the $65 an hour someone posted!
Just a bit of background - buying my first house and need to do a few things to it... so thanks for all the replies! Settlement isn't until the end of January though, but it doesn't hurt to try and get a handle on things! This is a great forum, you guys are great! Re: Labour Costs? 11Dec 31, 2008 7:40 am It very much depends on whether it is skilled or unskilled labour... $30 an hour for unskilled labour is about right... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! I am not sure whether Perth has its own way of doing things in regards to this. Most of Perth has class A (sandy soil), except for some areas near rivers or hills. 2 13098 Looking to tile the facade pillars rather than rendering.
