Can anyone tell me what the rules are with using pine framing timber with factory spliced joints. I know it can be used for wall studs but not sure if it can used for the other framing members. For example if pine timber is rated MGP10 but has factory spliced joints can you use this timber for wall plates? Or roof battens, lintels etc. Cheers Re: Using framing timber with spliced joints 2Dec 27, 2008 12:24 pm Not sure what you mean are you talking about finger jointed timber if so it should be fine to use as studs, if they are LOSP treated they should have used a 2 part glue hardener not the usual white PVA interior glue on the finger joins.
Wall plates not sure about. I have seen finger jointed timber used for battens. Lintels that are finger jointed are also laminated which makes them very strong. If you are in doubt the timber suppliers will be able to tell you what it can be used for. Good luck Re: Using framing timber with spliced joints 3Dec 27, 2008 1:39 pm Glu-laminated/ finger jointed timber will never have a MGP rating, rather the structual grade will be a 'GL' rating eg GL8, GL10 etc or for smaller structual LOSP primed pine, it wil be F7 Building Standards; Getting It Right!
