Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 22, 2008 10:55 am I have connected two downpipes of a shed to the stormwater system of the house, which runs to the street. The stormwater pipes I layed in the ground meet in front of the shed, then go straight across to the corner of the house.
My concern is driving over the pipes in the ground! Could anyone please give me some advice on whether or not this may crush the pipes or cause any leaks at any of the connections? It all looks so fragile when it was not yet covered with soil. -The ground was extremely hard (rockhard) due to clay and rocks contained in the soil. -I started digging the trenches by hand but had to give up and get a Dingo operator in. Trench depth approx. 300mm. -I had to use plenty of 90, 45, 22.5 and 15 deg. bends and two slip couplings. I also used plenty of pipe cement (blue glue) and primer. -I got rid of the fill and used coarse sand as a bed for the pipes -I used clean topsoil to backfill, compacting it as I went -The pipes are now sitting maybe 200mm below the ground I just don't have the confidence that the weight of a car would not cause any damage ....??? Is there anything that could be done to spread the weight of a car, other than expensive concreting? I would have liked to add a photograph but it seems attachements are not allowed here... Thanks heaps. Fred Re: Driving over stormwater pipes in ground? - Need advice pls 2Dec 22, 2008 3:00 pm 300mm is a little shallow to be honest. I think you will find that by law (depending upon states0 they need to be 450-600mm deep for such reasons. If you are worried, sink some pavers or timber into the ground to spread the load. some may say there is not much difference between 90 and 100mm. However 100mm pipes are physically stronger and are designed to be driven over. If you are worried, sink some pavers or timber into the ground to spread the load. I was thinking of pavers at some point, too. Tmber would not be an option I guess as it would attract termites. I don't know ... I always questioned the way they lay stormwater pipes here in QLD, often way less than 100mm below the surface, where people tend to drive their cars to park them on the front lawn. Someone told me recently that they do not lay it too deep in the ground for that reason, i.e. as otherwise the soil above would crush it over time due to heavy compaction.....??? As most others have posted above the install isn't compliant. The pipe is meant to be covered in loose soil or sand, the pipe has holes in it that leaks out a termicide… 10 5730 Hi everyone, Looking for some advise.
