Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 16, 2008 5:24 pm I have it in my head that I definitely want Terracotta roof tiles. But there have been a few comments on the forum that they don't fit, or marry, together as well as concrete and there is quite often a few gaps.
Our house will be on the top of a hill, and we have an N3 wind rating. I'm wondering if the lack of a tight fit will cause problems with the wind. Will there be issues with the gaps? I'm becoming slightly concerned.... I love Terracotta tiles, the look and the longevity of the colour, but not if there will be ongoing problems because of the wind. Any thoughts? Well terracotta tiles have been around for quite a while now and you don't see too many people rushing out to replace them for concrete. When I was an apprentice we built a new house for our roof tiler who had some connections to a supplier of the terracotta roof tiles. They did the job same as they usually did, sarking down first then the battens then the tiles. It was the only one in the whole suburb of Forest Lake and looked great. Every second tile is nailed and from memory terracotta tiles have holes for nailing so you dont need clips and terracotta tiles are like the concrete tiles where they overlap the next tile with enough overlap to prevent most leaking. Anything that did manage to get through and or any condensation should be taken care of by the sarking. I do remember and old chippy's theory that the wind getting under the front lip cooled the house by keeping the air in the roof space cooler. ?
