Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 11, 2008 7:51 am Hi there, I have been reading this site for a couple of weeks and it is wonderful, particularly where people post photos. Approx 6 months ago I purchased a two storey brick house, 25 yrs old. All of the floor coverings will eventually need to be replaced but all I have done was the upstairs bedrooms carpet before we moved in. I am in process of organising installation of new kitchen downstairs but the next problem is the internal staircase and upstairs hallway. It is currently carpeted but it is shabby and has to go. Underneath reveals very ordinary timber and chipboard so polishing the stairs as they are is not really an option. Also a bit worried about the noise and slip factor if we use timber. One floor company suggested the vinyl planks would be the way to go on both the stairs and the hallway. Has anyone used the planks for stairs? Other possibility would be vinyl planks (or timber) in the hallway and new carpet on the stairs. The downstairs section (where the stairs begin) will eventually have either timber flooring or planks of some description. Any suggestions on stairs would be hugely appreciated. Thanks, Angie Re: ideas for internal staircase 2Dec 11, 2008 9:33 am Hi Angie, If you have any thoughts of uneasiness about timber on stairs stick with the idea for carpet.
You can get some really good quality carpets these days that are suitable for the traffic of stairs. I would do the timber in the entrance and carpet on the stairs personally. I have found although I like the look they charge a fortune for timber for each step and I feel safer with a little one with carpet on the stairs.. Re: ideas for internal staircase 3Dec 11, 2008 9:18 pm Thanks for your suggestion, I really think that carpet is probably the best option too - I love the wood but between the noise, the dust and the slip factor, I don't think it is a look I am prepared to live with. The last thing I want is for someone to fall down the stairs! Any suggestions on what type of carpet would be best? Would love to see photos of what people have down with internal stairs and adjoining hallways. Re: ideas for internal staircase 4Dec 13, 2008 4:29 pm What style are you after :

What look do I want? THE FIRST ONE looks so fabulous that I may have to go back to the timber. The carpet runner looks great but I have already ruled that out due to the time and trouble it would take to clean - all those seperate little bits, think of the dust! If I do all carpet (not a runner) do you have any ideas for type of carpet to get? Any photos from anyone of carpeted stairs? I wait with breathless anticipation! Re: ideas for internal staircase 6Dec 14, 2008 7:25 am Hope this helps. Not much on google of carpetted modern staircases.

Personally I love the LOOK of timber stairs but I will be carpeting my stairs in the new house. Having lived with 2 kids in a house with floorboards I am soooo over the noise factor. It's almost a sigh of relief when I walk into someones house with carpet. I will have tiles downstairs and carpet on the stairs and upstairs. We did consider wooden stairs. My two munchkins fell down the carpeted stairs in 2 display homes (each kid did a different house of course just to be fair...I was right there with them so they were not unattended and running mad) and they both were unscathed. I have to wonder what the result would have been if they were timber stairs? The runner thing is a good option too I think. My neighbour says her carpet on the stairs has taken a bashing so I guess a good quality traffic carpet would be best? Good luck. Which type of carpet for the stairs? 9Dec 18, 2008 6:12 am Carpet it is then, but WHICH type of carpet? I know nothing about carpets and suspect the salesman will sell me whatever he wants me to buy! I want something that is not too dark, not too pale, hardwearing etc. But realistically I don't expect (or want) it to last a lifetime. Ten years maybe, then fashion will have changed so much that I'll want a new look anyway. Has anyone got specific suggestions re brand, type etc? carpet 10Dec 18, 2008 6:25 am You may have to do some research in the carpet stores and see which one comes up the most often as tough and hard wearing. It will probably be expensive. I will have to do the same thing (next year) so I will be interested in the findings. Perhaps someone will be able to help you with their experience? I do like that new colour that is in between a brown and a grey but it's not too dark. Good luck. If I find anything of interest I will let you know. I'll be watching this thread with interest.
PS- There are so many experts and knowledgable people on this forum I am sure someone will be able to advise you. Re: ideas for internal staircase 11Dec 18, 2008 6:47 am depends on what type of carpet you want !
on stairs you want the heaviest duty carpet you can.. stairs & hallways kills carpets. When you go to the carpet shop, look at the 'ACCS' rating on the back. this is an independant rating on the carpet, not done by the manufacturer. I think there normally yellow and blue stickers. You will want to be looking at "residential extra heavy duty including stairs" as a minimum. Properly laid and well looked after will give you 10 - 15 years no worries ! Cant really reccomend anything off the top of my head, But if its in your budget be sure to check out the Cavalier Bremworth brand. And when they are laying it, make sure that they lay it on smoothedge not just staple it in. Reason for this is even when stretched properly, on stairs carpet will eventually loosen up a bit. If it is stapled in, it is near impossible to do a good job of re stretching it. When laid on smoothedge it is an easy job to stretch out any bubbles. If you borrow some carpet samples from a shop, put some pictures up on here.. id be happy to give you my opinion on them ! Staircases and sausages. Should thou wish to keep thy palate sweet for sausages, avert thine eyes from their crafting. 14 4591 Not sure if that works? I was told the issue is the headspace clearance requirement on step 4. My builder is proposing shifting the beam 310mm towards the kitchen...I'm… 2 2563 Thanks. Yeh ideally that would have been good, but have progressed too far now. Hoping some well placed internal walls fixed up into the battens will provide some… 2 5404 |
