The screws ( One-Shots) are a little dearer than normal roofing sheets though - about $20 for a packet of 50. Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 23Feb 06, 2009 1:34 pm Hi, new here but reading for a while.
We did the bamboo thing after seeing it done at The Rise, Tarneit. We had to go back a few time to figure out how we would do it but it worked out great. Only live around the corner from the display homes so that didnt bother me. The bamboo blocks out just enough light and a huge amount of heat, and most importantly, I think it looks great. Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 25Feb 06, 2009 3:10 pm wow riffa that looks fantastic! How did you put it together? After 4 years - we're in! Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 26Feb 06, 2009 4:33 pm stonecutter1309 wow riffa that looks fantastic! How did you put it together? Thanks stonecutter1309. The timber holding up the bamboo is square architrave timber, which is about 1 inch from the bottom of the rafter. The bamboo came in rolls 1.8m wide X 2.4m long. I unrolled the bamboo and used a circular saw with a fine blade to cut to the required width. We then had to slide the bamboo in when we had a long section to put in, or sort of lifted it up on an angle to squeeze it in on the shorter sections. It was all a bit of trial and error. I have been having another idea about this lately, which involves running wires or sticks or whatever from the roof to (in our case) the fence on the far side of the alfresco area, and growing some sort of plant up them that loses its leaves in winter. The idea being that all the foliage would give you shade in summer, but disappear to let light into the house in summer... I wonder if it is workable? Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 28Feb 06, 2009 9:47 pm This is a great thread, My outdoor space will be west facing and I need the natural light coming in, but don't want the heat... I have been thinking colourbond, 1/2 laserlight alternating for it, so would be interested in hearing what people do/thinkg 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' How do you find it in the rain? I have put clear Suntuf roofing on the top, then the bamboo under that. So it is dry and the bamboo is protected from the weather. lisanne My outdoor space will be west facing and I need the natural light coming in, but don't want the heat... I have been thinking colourbond, 1/2 laserlight alternating for it, so would be interested in hearing what people do/thinkg We thought about the colourbond because our deck is west facing, but we thought it would be dark in winter. If the bamboo blocks too much light we can take out some of the bamboo panels to let some light in. Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 30Feb 07, 2009 9:41 am I'm just gonna comment on what a fantastic looking garden it is... all that lush green... I'm feeling a bit claustrophobic about all that bamboo though, makes me feel like ducking my head...heheh Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? Or what? 31Mar 01, 2010 5:51 pm Hi I just wanted to say how fantastic this looks. It is exactly what we are thinking of doing. If you don't mind - how much did it cost you in total and do you find it hot. We are getting a lot of people tell us that they are hot boxes etc etc Also what is your span - we need 6m *5m so quite wide. Cheers Re: Roof for Deck?? Perspex? Colorbond? I can tell you that it is not too hot underneath. Before we put the bamboo up it was boiling but now it has the bamboo in and it is quite comfortable. We have entertained under it during summer with no problems. The span is about 4m. joeygbh - The roof is quite high, so it doesnt feel like you need to duck your head. Riffa 4 9048 Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings. In my opinion you dont need to replace or paint the roof other than treat surface rust… 1 10181 You should pressure clean your roof first and make sure the paint you buy also is anti mould. 4 17655 |
