I wouldn't have anything to do with them. To any further enquiry from thenm I would simply answer "I've made alternate arrangements." That's it. No other info. If they want to take it further then so be it. And if they do notify some government agency, then good. It's all then official, the government department can tell you what really needs to be done and you can then choose who needs to do the work (if any!). Do the hard jobs first.
