Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Did we make a mistake? 21Nov 26, 2008 10:14 pm Bel, there is no way you can make a mistake.....you cut and fit it in between the studs. The size we bought fitted perfectly in the walls but had to be trimmed for the ceiling, you can trim (rip) them off with your hands if need be but a hacksaw has a much neater edge.
It's worth spending an extra $1000 or so IMHO. The displays have them......everywhere. That is why the houses are so quiet when you are in them with so many others. Even if you don't do the walls do the ceiling, that will assist with the noise transfer and add onto the upgraded carpet underlay. You can have my kids for the whole weekend if you like! So did you just go out at frame stage? Before or after all the cables/electric had been installed? How did you get it between the floors? My karma ran over your dogma Re: Did we make a mistake? 23Nov 26, 2008 11:42 pm Hi, we are currently in a double storey which we built 10 years ago with no insulation internally. You can hear the bath upstairs draining when you are in the loungeroom downstairs directly under it. You can hear the toilet flush and refill as well. At the minimum I would put it between floors and around ALL your plumbing. Gravity is noisy when water is rushing through pipes. You do not want to live with toilet sounds.
Our new build is having soundscreen everywhere, between all internal walls and extra thick in between the garage (DH's toy room) and the house!! Seriously, if you can put a sandwich into a square tupperware container that is sandwich size, you can put in batts. They are the same size as the spaces in the walls. At worst, you may need to tear some off the end to get it to fit. Hope this helps Joanne Re: Did we make a mistake? 25Nov 27, 2008 7:36 am That does help alot Joanne
So with the installation I guess I need to know: 1) At what stage in the build do you install it? 2) If you do it after electrics, is there a special way you have to push it in without damaging cables etc 3) How do you put it between the floors? From the bottom story with a ladder? 4) When you mention putting it around pipes, how is this done? Just wrap the insulation around a pipe? Or just stick it in the wall where the pipes are? How does it stay put? My karma ran over your dogma Re: Did we make a mistake? 26Nov 27, 2008 7:50 am Try these websites. The last one has a video, but I couldn't see it. Maybe you'll have more luck.

I can understand how the wall ones seem pretty self explanatory, although it does frighten me that there are cables and such in the walls which I wouldn't want to do damage too. But reading how to put it in the ceiling - balancing on a plasterboard on the upstairs frame - scares me a little and I don't think I would want DH or I doing that. I'm thinking I may just ask the SS for the name of the guy doing the external walls and then just offer him cash on side, that or ask for installation from the people we buy the batts from My karma ran over your dogma Re: Did we make a mistake? 28Nov 27, 2008 9:50 am haywgl That does help alot Joanne So with the installation I guess I need to know: 1) At what stage in the build do you install it? 2) If you do it after electrics, is there a special way you have to push it in without damaging cables etc 3) How do you put it between the floors? Yes you just cut and stuff, the rockwool batts are different to fibreglass, we found that they just kind of hugged onto the pipes or timber. If you have a void with a pipe running down it you put the batts into the frame of the void. If it is a pipe like we had above our lounge in the actual ceiling then you just stuff the batts around the pipe. You will also need to cut out around the light switches and power points. You can see how I did that in some of the photos below. Again use your hands or the hacksaw. It's easy, honestly.... You mentioned that each pack cover about 5m2. Is the batt size you bought 1350 X 580 and they fit between the stud nicely ? Seems like our stud spacing requires the 1350 x 430. Looks like the stud spacing for the house are different. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Did we make a mistake? 32Nov 27, 2008 9:50 pm Yes Hysterical we bought the 580mm size. You might want to check the measurements of your internal walls. The frame you've measured looks to be the wall backing onto the garage, yes?
As you can see in the pics I loaded up the gap between the studs around the powder room are much smaller than the gaps between the studs for the wall between bedrooms 2 and 3. You are better off trimming the batt down to fit the smaller/narrower walls and having them fit perfectly into the larger gaps rather than the other way around. If that makes sense. It makes sense. Will measure again once the 2nd floor is up. In the floor, and the walls around the shower toilet area. But make sure you don't make the kids play area to sound proof. It's better to hear them and know something is not right when it goes too quiet. Joanne said Quote: Seriously, if you can put a sandwich into a square tupperware container that is sandwich size, you can put in batts. Nice analogy - and I put dead batts into my tupperware containers every day. Steve I'll look into different shower heads and ask the plumber about some engineering and see what he says.
