Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 21Nov 21, 2008 6:51 am We will be using the dedicated home theater room as a gym. We are not great TV watchers and with three of us paying gym memberships it would get more use a a gym.
PP Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 22Nov 21, 2008 7:00 am muzzman If you do put it in a bedroom, I would make sure there's enough room for a TV - you want something to look at while you are working out rather than just a blank wall... I agree, you will find you may work out longer too. I love the iPod. We have our spin bike in the rumpus room for that reason. The weight bench hasnt made it from the garage as yet (from the move). And i need to blow up my fit ball, sit ups are not the same on the floor Friends of ours had this lovely big gym in their formal dinner area for about 2 years & it got a regular workout, as a clothes line. nesspop Why am I covered in feathers Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 24Nov 21, 2008 12:45 pm We (or rather I as I'm the only one that uses it) setup the gym room in one of the minor bedrooms. I forego the luxury of having a gym membership as going there after getting home from work just wasn't working anymore.
It currently has an exercise bike, elliptical trainer, small tv and a dvd player. Also has a fan for those hot days. Oh, and it has a floor mat and exercise ball. A bench and free weights is in the pipeline. [sneakersss] Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 25Nov 21, 2008 4:42 pm A home gym is an absolute essential for me, and the right room was a prime consideration when choosing our house. The kids are disappointed to not have a home theatre, but they'll get over it.
Of course, I have a special interest in that room, since I'm a personal trainer and plan to use it for my business too.... My husband and eldest son THINK that they're going to get to train there too, but that will depend on client bookings... Home gym setups with multiple stations can be OK - a cable setup is a really good thing to have anyway - and a 135lb weight stack should be adequate for most people, at least for a while. If I was advising someone with limited space on the best equipment to buy, I'd suggest this: A solid adjustable incline bench A barbell rack A pair of adjustable dumbbells and perhaps a few fixed weight ones too A barbell with a small selection of plates A stability ball It sounds like a lot of equipment, but it would take up little space. If you have your heart set on your home gym, just consider adding a stability ball and a pair of adjustable dumbbells, and you'd have plenty of options. In case you care, here's what I'm planning on putting in my 6m x 3.6m room: Power rack with high/low cable and chin up bar Adjustable incline bench Stability ball A BIG set of dumbbells from 1kg to 20 kg, preferably shiny ones (shiny is important ) A 6' bar with rubber-coated plates A selection of medicine balls A selection of resistance bands A stability ball A BOSU A Reebok step My beloved spin bike A few other odds and ends, and probably a boxing bag mounted on a pergola outside the room...I have plenty of gloves. Oh, and a TV and DVD player for my huge collection of workout DVDs - seriously. I love my DVD workouts! That's more than most people might want or need, but all of mine is tax-deductible. Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 26Nov 21, 2008 6:37 pm We built a 5 bedroom house so we could dedicate one of the bedrooms entirely to a home gym - exercise bike, weight bench, treadmill and various other smaller pieces of equipment. I got sick and tired of tripping over the weight bench at the foot of the bed each morning, and the gym room was essential for the new house. Built a Clarendon 'Balmain' 2008 Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 27Nov 23, 2008 1:16 am I looked for a house where I could add on a large gym. It was an absolute must. I'm into powerlifting and bodybuilding.
We've built a 6m by 4m room, carefully placed away from and bedrooms so as not to disturb anyone sleeping when I drop heavy *** dumbells. Equipment I have at the moment... Power Rack (for squats, bench press etc) Cable Station Preacher Station Bench Leg Press 3 long dumbell racks and a complete set of dumbells from 2kg to 50 kg Plus many bars, attachments etc I'm currently trying to source the thickest rubber gym flooring so that the noise doesn't reveberate around the house or crack the slab I have other equipment I'd like but the real problem will be trying to find room for it all.
