Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 19, 2008 8:24 pm Hey guys, funny question maybe, (dont think i've seen one on here yet) but i'm looking to convert some part of the house into a home gym (for me)...lol
Afte my op, i've decided to get myself into tip top shape, so have gone about to buy a home gym (thanks ebay!). Cant afford a proper gym just yet but may next year, i hope to join one. They are not cheap!!! But the question is, where in our house, do i put it? We have a spare 3rd bedroom which is the first choice. Then i suppose theres the garage, but when its cold that could hinder my motivation to work out i suppose and then of course we still have to try and empty the crap out of the garage so that we can fit at least one of our 2 cars in there? I prefer not to put it outside in the alfresco, as our dog will probably lift his leg on it for one and secondly, i would like to keep that area solely for entertaining. So, has anyone else got a home gym set up and where have you chosen to put it??? Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 2Nov 19, 2008 8:31 pm DH's gym is currently in our 3rd bedroom - it will be moved to the garage. We made our garage another 1.5m deep to accomodate golf cart and home gym.
Chat to a fitness store first about the bare minimum that you need - those full home gyms tend to be quite bulky and aren't really all that fantastic. DH has a bench, free weights and a weight cage After 4 years - we're in! So, has anyone else got a home gym set up and where have you chosen to put it??? We have one in our design (haven't started building yet!), it is 3 x 3m and is a seperate room off the rumpus. If you have a gym room somewhere difficult to access then you won't use it, in our last one we had it in the garage and it never got used ever. Time will tell whether this one gets used..... Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 5Nov 19, 2008 8:41 pm I ended up joining one after sending my rented treadmill back that I didn't use due to a big lack of motivation. Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 6Nov 19, 2008 8:47 pm Phoenix you can get those gyms now that fold away into a closet like cupboard - they would be ideal for a bedroom that you could hide away from eyes when not being used.
We used to keep ours in the spare bedroom however gave it away. DH has started looking at them again but luckily with an oversized 6 car garage there will be more then enough room for us. Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 7Nov 19, 2008 8:48 pm WOW thanks guys, i didn't think i'd get so many responses...
Its not something that people discuss i suppose when planning a house, as i said i havent really seen it discussed on the forum and its not something i thought i'd do either....BUT hey what the hell???!!! BTW, is it worthwhile putting a lock on the door to stop our 4yo son getting in and doing silly things?? The unit i'm buying has the weights caged, so thats good, it also hasthe following features: Ab crunch/Leg Raise Standing Bicep Curls Tricep Extensions Vertical Chest press Pec Deck Lat Pulldown Low Pulley Rows Straight Arm Pullovers Leg/seated calf Press Leg Extensions Leg/wrist Curls with 135lbs weight stack, not to much i suppose but more than adequate for me, i think? Our 11yo son is also smiling from ear to ear, he wants to start bulking up!!! Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 8Nov 19, 2008 8:50 pm Phoenix I think your 3rd bedroom sounds ideal for your gym. Or if you don't use your front lounge (if you have one!) you could put it in there, but then it'd be on view for everyone to see as they walk in. Good on you for making the effort to get into shape, I wish I was as motivated! Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 9Nov 19, 2008 8:57 pm Nicola, that's one thing we actually designed in to our house plan, as Jo said. We had the garage made into a 4 car garage size, but had that room constructed within that. I also had a cupboard built in it with 4 shelves specifically for the 4 school bags, as you can access that room from the garage
We also had a ceiling fan installed in there - you may want to consider adding that, if possible (?) Spare bedroom sounds good, and so does a lock so little Mr4 doesn't hurt himself! Yeah...maybe time will tell whether or not we use it, I already go to the gym, but DH just doesn't have time, so maybe it will end up being his gym!!! So maybe this is me getting a little something back perhaps?? It seems i've sparked a fire here though, everyone seems interested in using it!!! I might have to make up a timetable for who gets to have a go and when??? Unless of course they/we all lose motivation??? I hope not, even if it gets occasional use and keeps us somewhat in shape it will be worth it! I think anyway....lol Quite excited...lol...all going well, we will pick it up tomorrow. If i say i'm too sore to type soon, you know why!!! Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 11Nov 19, 2008 9:12 pm petal I also had a cupboard built in it with 4 shelves specifically for the 4 school bags, as you can access that room from the garage Petal, how organised are you????? But then again you have more school bags laying around than i do i suppose...lol Hmm time will tell hey?? Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 12Nov 19, 2008 9:30 pm **Phoenix** Petal, how organised are you????? Have fun with your new 'toys'!!!!!! Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 16Nov 20, 2008 6:56 am I must say I've been secretly designing our next house (wifey still convinced she doesn't want to build again - I've got some work to do there...), and the first design had a gym.
You see I got back into Martial Arts (for those anywhere near Berwick, Rowville or Murrumbeena, the Golden Lion Acedmy of Kung Fu and Tai Chi is excellent for adults and kids) this year and I got both the kids started a few months ago as well, so we could all use somewhere to practice. Plus, I used to do a fair bit of weight training and wifey actually does a fair bit of varied excercise, so we could all benefit from it... Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 17Nov 20, 2008 7:10 am **Phoenix** Our 11yo son is also smiling from ear to ear, he wants to start bulking up!!! I'm fairly sure you'd be sensible about this - but young males really shouldn't get into heavy weight training until they hit puberty. A good friend has a young son very heavily into rugby at a very elite school in Sydney - they discourage heavy weight training for all kids under 15. Once they get to that age - they can pile on the muscle pretty quick. Get ready to be eaten out of house & home - I buy 5kg of chicken breast fillets a fortnight since DH has started seriously building muscle. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 18Nov 20, 2008 7:18 am stonecutter1309 I buy 5kg of chicken breast fillets a fortnight since DH has started seriously building muscle. wow! sounds like how much my brothers would eat... except... i don't see any muscle building with them..... Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 19Nov 20, 2008 7:21 am We had a gym set up in our current home - just a treadmill, abking pro, some weights and some machine for DH's knee.
I can honestly say it barely got used - DH does all his exercise at training and I NEVER found the time to use it with DD and DS always interupting my 'workout'. I also found because it was at home I could always put off doing it. I recently joined Curves and love every second of it - it's my ME time, no chance of kids interupting me and it only takes 30 minutes. Not hugely expensive for $50 a month. If you know you would use it and get the most out of it, I'd say go for it! But unfortunatly for me I never got anything out of it My karma ran over your dogma Re: Gym Room in your home - anyone? 20Nov 21, 2008 1:30 am If you do put it in a bedroom, I would make sure there's enough room for a TV - you want something to look at while you are working out rather than just a blank wall... After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! I have a home gym at home. It weights 150KG including the weight stack. I'm a big boy, around 150KG myself. I was thinking about moving it up stairs to the second… 0 6311 Hi there, looking to have a gym in a new build. Planning to install some sort of rubber mat flooring (on concrete) i.e. Asking the builder to not do floorboards in the gym… 0 1457 Hey, I am wanting to add a second toilet to my house, bit we have limited room. There is a hallway/entry that is never used, so was thinking this could be an option. Only… 0 4716 |
