Same house, different facade! So here it is your chance to have you say on this HOT topic. Do homes with Eaves look better or are they a thing of the past. I am led to believe there are benefits for passive cooling etc. but this is about aesthetics (ie what look you prefer) I think most people know where I stand on this. I prefer the look of no eaves for several reasons (ie extra floor space, less cleaning / maintenance, more modern look etc) but not every one agrees. The next 10 days will tell ... My passive solar house will be always cheaper to run than your eaveless house. Here is another fashion - the rendered monolithic look. If you going to cover up all that brick work why don't you just use Hebel (aerated concrete). Much less energy top manufacture and provides insulation to boot. Re: Eaves - The Final Verdict - You Decide! 4Nov 18, 2008 6:31 am Eaves for sure for me - Somehow a house without eaves looks incomplete
beegee Re: Eaves - The Final Verdict - You Decide! 5Nov 18, 2008 6:44 am I'll take the eaves thanks. Who needs more floor space? Just get a bigger block. Everything I know, I learned from SBS. Totally agree (never mind the eaves question). The problem is, most builders won't give this as an option, although this is changing (PD do now I believe). I think the days of timber frame and brick veneer are very very numbered. Oh yeh and I like eaves btw. Re: Eaves - The Final Verdict - You Decide! 9Nov 18, 2008 7:52 am I actually prefer the look of the house on the left at the top of this set of postings but in general I prefer eaves. We wouldn't have had them if we'd gone with our first choice of builder however that design and builder wasn't available here and luckily our new builder has designed the house with eaves. Re: Eaves - The Final Verdict - You Decide! 11Nov 18, 2008 8:03 am I'm going to vote both look good. If we're talking about aesthetics, eaves are totally facade dependant. Some look better with, some look better without.
I'm building in a "Tuscan inspired" estate. The traditional Tuscan look is eaveless, and some of the homes that are going for the authentic look are magnificent. But other homes can look very boxy. Just on resale, from talking to agents, if a house ticks all the boxes of a potential buyer, eaves or eaveless will generally make no difference to the sale. All the houses I have lived in have had them, and the house we are building will have them too. I prefer the look of them as they make the house look like a house and not a box! Each to their own! We have a rather large 4 metre eave at the back of our house shading it from the hot west sun in summer...also doubles as an alfresco . I think it will make a huge difference to shading the family room, than having nothing. Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Energy wise, the eaves have it. I think the only point of this poll is if Matt agrees to retrofit eaves at the end of it, so I expect he wants to know how much gear he needs to sell to pay for his new eaves. The answer is, more than you would have needed to sell before you built. "ECOECO" At 'EcoEco', we design windows, we design the best windows, we do it for you, so that when you’re happy we are happy. And yes the whole rain thing would annoy me too. As a matter of fact it is raining here right now and all of my windows are still open. It is not coming down in buckets of course but it is more than a sprinkle.
