I am led to believe there are benefits for passive cooling etc. but this is about aesthetics (ie what look you prefer) In defence of Matt. You can have your cake and eat it too - sort of. Derek Wrigley in Sustainable homes makes a reasonable argument for no fixed eaves in a passive solar design. Instead he recommends attaching simple hinged white shade-cloth awnings to the roof edge. The shades reflect heat but admit daylight. This provides you complete control over your solar gain at any time of the year. Cold on a sunny winter day - lift them right out of the way. Hot on a stinking summer - drop them down. And everything in between. Re: Eaves - The Final Verdict - You Decide! 38Nov 18, 2008 7:29 pm House on the bottom has shadows from eaves.
