Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Why are some builders names censored? 23Nov 13, 2008 6:53 pm HomeOne's owners just don't seem to understand that if they were threatened by a large building company, and they went public with that threat, then the following would happen:
1) Huge amounts of free publicity for HomeOne all over the web 2) Masses of people signing onto the forum to show support 3) The "offending" negative comments about that building company would be immediately mirrored on all sorts of other sites around the world to show supoport for freedom of speech and legitimate comment 4) Complete and utter PR disaster for whichever builder made the stupid legal threat 5) Builder withdraws threat of action and realises they can't play bullyboy with the world wide web. Similar scenarios to this have played out many times and the result is always the same. Do the hard jobs first. I joined this forum a couple of months ago, and found it INCREDIBLY informative some of the advise from this forum's members are just gold! If the builders are serious about customer service, instead of suing whoever mentioned their name they should rectify customer dissatisfaction as much as possible Re: Why are some builders names censored? 26Nov 13, 2008 7:16 pm Censorship is great!
Some builders are proud of their work and let their name be used. Some builder's are embarassed about their work and don't let their name be used. It's rather thoughful of the builder that have no confidence in themselves to let us kow who they are. Now you know which builders to avoid. Thanks Metricon. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Why are some builders names censored? 28Nov 13, 2008 11:41 pm That's the booby prize.
For that logic to have any value we'd need a sticky listing all the building companies that have asked for their names to be censored. (Obviously spelt out i - n / s - o - m - e / w - a - y so we could make that judgment). My guess is that *edited - no need for that here* even for that. Do the hard jobs first. Appreciate the helpful (and less helpful ) suggestions... Thread closed Re: Why are some builders names censored? 30Nov 15, 2008 12:08 am Guys,
Thanks for bearing with me whilst we had a chance to chat about this behind the scenes. Firstly let me say that whilst a lot of what has been said here is relevant and some good points made there are also some points which are unhelpful and completely unnecessary. Remember you choose to come here, it is your choice to post (or not post) but if you choose to post it would nice to be constructive. Now... Homeone has decided to remove certain names for its own reasons. Although we don't need to justify the reasons for these decisions it can be summed up quite simply. We have lives! Yes we could spend time in court, money on lawyers and solicitors defending accusations of defamation etc...but in the long run we have lives. Sometimes it is easier just to agree to censor a certain word (in this case a company name) and keep everything moving along than spend time and money to achieve, in our opinion, very little difference. I mean who doesnt know who we are talking about when we type m3tricon for example?? Not everyone who joins this forum to post does so with good intentions. There are people out there who intentionally and purposefully set out to send out false and misleading information. Last week Homeone received a letter from a building companies lawyer claiming unacceptable and untrue information had been posted about them. The statements made were similar to the following: XXX Homes is deceptive in its dealing with Clients. XXX Homes cannot be trusted. XXX Homes is an incompetent home building company. Had these statements been made in a more constructive manner we may not have had any issue but instead this member communicated their distress in this manner causing the builder to take exception. Situations such as these force us to take actions to protect both the member but also to protect Homeone. To date only 3 names have ever been censored and only 1 of those is a 'big builder'.... As members you are entitled to vote on whether our stance in acceptable. We make choices to run this forum different to other forums and it is unfair to draw comparisons between this and any other forum as we do it our way. We do it this way because we want to, because we can and because it works for us. Homeone is a forum about sharing information, experiences about house building and the trials and tribulations of the building process. There are always ups and downs and in a perfect world we could all say whatever we wanted .... but lets face it .... its not a perfect world and saying what you want, when you want generally gets you in trouble (It certainly does with me!!!) I know this doesn't change anything but hopefully it goes some way towards explaining the reasons behind the decisions that have been made to this point. As the forum grows (and the rate of growth is massive currently) there are going to be more and more situations that will create crossroads where decisions will have to made. Not everyone will agree with every decision that is made and the best part about living in a democracy is your right to vote. In this case you are able to vote with your fingers!! Cheers Guys, Matt Re: Why are some builders names censored? 31Nov 15, 2008 6:57 am Hi Matt
I agree with everything you say. A certain major builder in recent times was the target of malicious gossip which emanated from another major builder, it cost the target a great deal. It is an unpleasant and costly experience when this happens. At the same time, people get frustrated with builders and find some comfort in letting loose here. Mostly the cause of the problem is not the issue, or the builders' desire to fix it - it is lousy communication, usually at the builders' end. I think Homeone should create a code of conduct covering the issue and every member should sign onto this when becoming a member or now for existing members. The code would include what procedures to follow in dealing with grievances with builders - talk to supervisor, talk to CSR, talk to building manager. Builders could then see that this is reasonable and if they don't follow-up, that negative publicity would ensue. We could all be kept abreast of where a grievance is up to. Leave the "anonymous" builders as they are at the same time create the forum for open discussion. I guess I wasn't really thinking about people coming on here just to slander certain companies. I remember that post your are referring to and comments like that are not helpful and when accusations like that are made then they must give full details of the problem because there is always 2 sides to a story.
I know some builders can be ******* at times but clients can be just as bad. I realise that your job can be frustrating having to deal with these issues but I suppose you are going about it the right way. Re: Why are some builders names censored? 33Nov 15, 2008 9:38 am Jason (homeone) and Mattwalker,
Perhaps Mattwalker's post explaining the situation (or a variation of it) could be made a sticky under the heading of "Why Censorship happens on homeone." This conversation comes up every so often when new members have an issue and it may just save this conversation from having to happen every six months or so. Just a thought. If I have a problem that I have experienced with a particular builder then I will name names. Same goes for anything. Why beat around the bush. I am building with Henley and so far my experience has been good. We are looking to start building very soon (might be next year now) but they have been upfront with all their communication to date. That sucks! Hope it all works out. Good to move away from steel anyway for all your reasons, but it's also thermally poor. 16 17895 Hi All, I just wanted to close this topic out with an update.
