Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 12, 2008 8:08 pm Hi, I finally got inside my house today to check out my tiles. While I love the colours of them and the general look, a close-up inspection left me feeling like maybe a good job has not been done!
Would love some other opinions on the following: Kitchen - why would they leave a tile and a half blank on the top right hand row? As far as I know nothing is going there Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Angle between floor tile and bath wall - looks like there is no grout here? Is that normal? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Uneven grout between floor and vanity kicker Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Some grout colour on the wall - I imagine this is easy to just paint over or something Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Floor tiles a lot lower than floorboards - the floorboards are graduated down so it's not a drastic edge, but I thought they would have built the tiles up a bit more to make it a bit more level Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ gaps in niche - he has built up the bottom of niche so the water runs off, but still I would've expected some more grout Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ More corners where there looks to be no grout Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Sharp edge where the bath trims meet - the shower screen I hope will cover this.. Trust me, they look like trouble. Also, the floor tiles against a timber floor, that’s normal. Usually there is a piece of step Scotia that makes the step not to noticeable, ask for that as well. Don't worry I thought the same when our bathrom was getting done. The tiler will silicone these areas. DH said this is done as if there is any movement in the walls these are the areas that crack. Re: Is this a bad tile job? 5Nov 12, 2008 8:40 pm That makes sense. I wonder why he hasn't done it already?
There is still the gappy grout issues, but I guess I can live with them if everything else is ok will live with the different floor levels too On a good note, the tiler tiled much higher than he was going to thanks to a small stuff up with the feature tile and a 6 pack which looks great. NO!!!! You don’t live with grapy grout. That’s where water leaks! I've heard alot of horror stories of those niches in showers leaking and causing all sorts of trouble in the walls. Re: Is this a bad tile job? 10Nov 12, 2008 9:16 pm All of the waterproofing in the niche, shower and bath should be done before the tiling is done. As said, all edges should silicone to allow for movement.
Grout stains can be painted over once clean. He would have been waiting for the grout to be dry and clean before he calked in the silicone. In the first kitchen shot, does the tiling on the top right finish with a whole tile or a cut tile? That would be my only concern about the job. Re: Is this a bad tile job? 11Nov 12, 2008 9:21 pm thanks WBA - I will definitely make sure they get sealed!
zaff - no, the kitchen tile has been cut to line up with the end cupboard. Bizarre! I will be asking why. The material under the tiles is fibro cement sheeting, so didn't have to be waterproofed - but still, you wouldn't want water going under the tiles and just sitting there, so I agree to get it all siliconed. As far as I know nothing is going there Simone, I've been looking at this trying to work out why they have done it this way. I think they must have decided that because they had to cut a tile where the tiling finished under your overhead that it would look funny continueing (sp?) that through to the window (to keep it level) - I hope that makes sense I think it would look better if they had have left it as a full tile, just will mean that the tile will be a bit higher than the bottom of the right hand side overhead running to the window, sorry, this is hard to explain They will just have to take out that 1/2 tile & redo to the window to do this... The only other way it could have been done is if the tiler had of worked it out for the tiles to meet the overhead cupboards as a full tile & work down from there meaning the tiles that meet your benchtop would be the cut ones.... OK, hope you can work out what I was trying to say!! Re: Is this a bad tile job? 13Nov 12, 2008 9:37 pm Thanks Jo, yes, I think I get you! The tiler really should have done what you suggested - ie started at the top and made sure the bottom ones were the ones to be cut.
I guess there's no way of improving it now without the line looking funny running to the window --- but, I will be mentioning it! Re: Is this a bad tile job? 14Nov 12, 2008 9:41 pm Actually I am just looking at it again, and I am thinking it would look at least less weird, to have the tile running out of line with the bottom of the cupboards to the end of that wall, than have that big gaping gap there? Re: Is this a bad tile job? 17Nov 12, 2008 9:49 pm Donuts i would say something about the tiling! You have spent so much time carefully selecting colours (which are lovely ) and finishes to have it ruined by a bad tiling job! Re: Is this a bad tile job? 18Nov 13, 2008 5:11 am You know I actually think it just might be a full tile underneath the rangehood cupboads? I would remove that half tile and tile up to the level that is under the rangehood. Re: Is this a bad tile job? 19Nov 13, 2008 5:53 am Hi Donuts The tiling in the kitchen looks very uneven to me eg lines are not straight, the first thing I noticed. Also, he has used very big gaps between each tile therefore alot of grout has to be used...this may account for the uneven look. As for the gap on the right hand side, what was he thinking off get the builder to fix it, visually it dosent look right Mrs B Re: Is this a bad tile job? 20Nov 13, 2008 8:46 am In regards to wall corners and where benchtops meet tiles.
Grout should NEVER be used in these locations. The corners are supposed to be filled in with colour matched silicon, not grout. House walls move, and grout will crack letting water in When we built, siliconing was the very last job done Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Regardless of wall hung toilet or floor pan toilet your feet will be right on drain, seems to me the waste should not be in that location given the design.
