Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 28, 2025 4:54 pm Does anyone know if electrical wiring used in new home builds is capable of 32a? I have a M3tricon built home (2.5 years old) and I'm looking at options for EV charging. Ideally, a single phase, 32a 7kw charger would be sweet if the existing wiring is capable. I probably should also point out, I'm not going to do the install, I'm just wanting to know if the existing wiring is up for it (hopefully by another M3tricon customer who has/is doing the same). Re: Standard Electrical Wiring for new homes 3Apr 30, 2025 6:25 pm Not an electrician here but a standard GPO is 10amps. So if the wiring required to carry 32a was installed as wiring to carry such a load then yes. But if it wasnt then its likely to only be a 10amp line, so, no. Such as would be the case with an induction hotplate. These cant be plugged into a standard 10amp GPO. Retro fitting a car charger typically requires a dedicated citcuit and wiring. Stanks Bimbob was spot on with his post. You will need a dedicated circuit the same as an induction cooktop basically. The great thing though is typically most meter boxes are located on the outside wall of the garage and if yours is it should be very simple to run a cable from the box into your garage. However, what you will need your sparky to calculate is whether you have enough capacity on your single phase to handle the load or if you need to upgrade it. It is pretty basic though Cheers Simeon Architectural Homes & Duplexes - specialising in custom designing homes to your budget Get a Free Onsite Consultation Today or send a PM for information, questions or advice. Yeah, that’s fair to be uneasy about it. We had similar wording pop up early on and our conveyancer pushed back hard.
