Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 08, 2008 11:46 pm Just wondering if anyone knows whether there's a law/code re: light switch location?
We've been disputing the location of our HT light switch. It was originally (as per our plan attached to our contract) placed inside the HT but for later on moved outside of the HT room (unfortunately, we didn't notice it when we asked for a correction to the electrical plan). During our walk through, our SS justified the new location saying... there's a code that requires light switches to be located within a meter of reach from the entry door. I wonder if anyone has heard this? Even so, isn't it that they should still inform us that they are going to move the light switch outside? This became a problem when we put in two sliding doors to the HT room... thus, SS was saying the position of the light switch would be too far from the entry doors... Hope there's an electrician in this forum to shed light on this.. thanks! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Is there such a code/law on light switch location? 2Nov 09, 2008 1:32 am Hi VJ,
If your contract indicate the light switch should be inside the HT room then the builder should put in the HT room. No excuses unless the building surveyor or local authority said to change the location. Check your contract again and if your in the right then tell the SS it's in the contract. As mention before SS will say anything to get you to accept handover. A family member of mine built with S experience it. Put the light switch inside the Home Theatre and close to the door. Light switches don't protrude much behind the gyprock wall. Do a section drawing an see if you have about 15 mm clearance between the back of the gyprock and the sliding door. Looks like no one agrees with our SS re: this code/law about position of light switch. Even our inspector doesn't agree with him. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! We haven't discussed the location of the switch inside the HT room... though I was thinking it would be where the original location was (which is just behind the sliding door (nearer to the screen). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping!
