Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Single Phase/Double Phase/Triple Phase 4Nov 07, 2008 8:07 pm If you check your unit on the web, it should say what phase you need. We could have got away with single (ours is 12kw) but we wanted a spa as well, so needed the extra phase, and if you want to add anything at a later date, you will need the extra. We have three phase and everything works like a dream! It does cost alot more to put in, unfortunately. Re: Single Phase/Double Phase/Triple Phase 5Nov 07, 2008 8:12 pm Bel,
Just because your cooling unit is rated at 18kw, and this is a large number for a domestic appliance, don't assume it needs 3 phase power. Check with your builder. Chances are it will only require single phase. Triple, or 3 phase power is usually for industrial installations or workshops, or commercial premises. Some people get it installed to their houses, but they are usually the ones with a big shed out the back with lots of heavy duty equipment in it. *Science content* Measuring between a single phase and earth gives you the normal run of the mill 240 volt power; if you have two or three phase power, measuring between phases will give you 415 volts. If your cooling unit runs on 240 volts, then single phase is all you need. HOWEVER: Depending on the 'Maximum Demand' or calculated electrical load for your entire house, the electrical authority might decide to connect your cooling unit to one phase, and the rest of your house on another phase, just to keep things balanced. "Three Phase supplies are not normally available to residential customers and are subject to availablity from exisiting Powercor Australia electricity lines" I'm really hoping we can still have it My karma ran over your dogma Re: Single Phase/Double Phase/Triple Phase 7Nov 07, 2008 8:25 pm Just saw your post Eager - thanks for that! It is starting to make sense now
I might give the a/c company a call and also the power company before I send in the forms. Do you know anything about two phase power, it also says it is 415 volts the same as three phase, but I'm wondering what the difference is and why Casa told me to stay away from it My karma ran over your dogma Re: Single Phase/Double Phase/Triple Phase 8Nov 07, 2008 8:36 pm haywgl Just saw your post Eager - thanks for that! I said forget 2-phase. The reason is that if you can get 2-phase then you can get 3-phase electricity, so skip over it. That is, if you can have 2-phase then you can also have 3-phase, which is better than 2-phase and only marginally more expensive. There will always be 3 phase power running past your house, but is the connection of 2 or 3 separate cables to your house (with 2 or 3 separate electricity meters mind you) that is the issue. Very little equipment actually runs on 2 phase power; some old welders and milking machines come to mind. At a rough guess you don't use either???
