Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 07, 2008 2:47 pm We decided a while back to concrete a large part of the backyard.
The first step was to put the call our using service central. (Great service! If you have never used it before it is really easy) After we received our 3 quotes we decided which tradesman we were going to use. Yesterday we received a call to ask if they could start today ... hmm YEAH!! Here is where we got to today: The bobcat driver came in and dug out the area and levelled it out I love the fact that the guys took the time to lay down some plastic to protect my driveway and garage floor. I got the bobcat driver to drop all the scraped soil at the back of the house. With the area dug out they guys began to box the area in preparation for the concrete When the bobcat was finished I got stuck in with my shovel and rake and levelled the dirt out. Once boxed up the road base was dropped in. The drain was dug and now we await delivery of the coloured concrete on Monday morning. Hooray! Re: Concreting the backyard...UPDATED 11/11/08 2Nov 07, 2008 6:01 pm That's service for you! How good is the drive-thru garage! I hadn't heard of Service Central before, but I've just checekd it out and I think I'll be giving it a try soon as well. I have used the service a lot in the past to find local guys to get stuff done and fast. The good news is they only answer the jobs if they actually want them! Re: Concreting the backyard...UPDATED 11/11/08 6Nov 07, 2008 7:31 pm It looks great - what a great job they have done in such a small amount of time
Can I ask what is the measurement of your backyard? (From the back of your house to the rear fence) trying to get an idea of the size of my backyard My karma ran over your dogma Re: Concreting the backyard...UPDATED 11/11/08 8Nov 07, 2008 8:25 pm Looks like it is going to look great! Are you getting it done in the same colour as the driveway? Can I ask how much per m2 it is costing you? Am currently getting driveway quotes and one of the options we're considering is coloured concrete Re: Concreting the backyard...UPDATED 11/11/08 9Nov 07, 2008 9:51 pm haywgl It looks great - what a great job they have done in such a small amount of time Can I ask what is the measurement of your backyard? (From the back of your house to the rear fence) trying to get an idea of the size of my backyard Down the side (where the concrete is going) is 13m long and 5 1/2m wide and the back bit (where the grass is/was and the cubby) is 18m long and 6m wide. There is enough room to kick the Hawks footy around (not too high) and not too much time spent maintaining it. I guess I would like bigger but this is a fairly good trade off for now! Re: Concreting the backyard...UPDATED 11/11/08 10Nov 07, 2008 9:54 pm Hi
Can i ask what is the black squarish thing in the middle of the concrete space ? Thank you Re: Concreting the backyard...UPDATED 11/11/08 11Nov 07, 2008 9:58 pm grandslam That really is impressive seeing them lay the plastic down for protection. Havent seen to many workers take that much care. Thumbs up to them!! He actually mentioned it during the quote and that was what got him over the line for me. We were chatting about how he would attack the job and he said that it would be a shame to get any dirt on the driveway and that he would lay some plastic down over it (an off the cuff comment) and I stuck that away for later. When he arrived this morning the first thing he did was roll that sucker out. It is rare these days to see a tradesman that cares about others work and actually takes the time to tidy up. His apprentice (son) was running around tidying up everything. He even got the blower out to remove the dust from inside the garage!!! Thumbs up so far! Can I ask how much per m2 it is costing you? Am currently getting driveway quotes and one of the options we're considering is coloured concrete I decided against spending the extra to get exposed aggregate as I will be decking over part of it next year. We have gone for a coloured concrete (charcoal) with a charcoal colour sealer on top. The total cost will end up around $60 per sq metre. The area is about 65 sq metres. He was the same as the other quotes but the plastic (and the professionalism) won my business. That is the drain. I have drawn on the picture to show you the fall of water: I considered putting in a strip drain to match the front: But as it will be covered over down the track it was really going to be a waste. The one we used was like this but shallower: Re: Concreting the backyard...UPDATED 11/11/08 15Nov 08, 2008 1:51 am Looking good so far, cant wait to see the finished results.
haywgl Can I ask what is the measurement of your backyard? (From the back of your house to the rear fence) trying to get an idea of the size of my backyard hehehe I was going to ask this as well. Ours is smaller though width-wise, at 4.6 x 18 long, not big enough to kick a hawks footy around Re: Concreting the backyard...UPDATED 11/11/08 16Nov 08, 2008 4:20 am mattwalker The total cost will end up around $60 per sq metre. wow that's a lot cheaper than my first quote ($70 per m2 - supply only! ) Will definitely be getting more quotes! Might try that service central place too. Thanks Matt Re: Concreting the backyard...UPDATED 11/11/08 17Nov 08, 2008 6:52 am The quotes I got were between $58 and $65psqm including finishing and sealing.
Once we are finished I am happy to pass over the details of this tradesman!! I am always happy to share a good find Re: Concreting the backyard...UPDATED 11/11/08 18Nov 08, 2008 9:12 am Hi Matt
Is your drain connected to any pipes or just goes into the ground?
