Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 14, 2024 7:11 pm Hi all, I would like to find out how practical it might be to convert our garage's flat roof to an a-frame. I would like to do the conversion for two reasons: 1. It currently leaks. 2. I would like to store things in the trusses. Here's a photo of the interior, Figure 1. The top of the photo is the garage door in the open position. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Figure 1. There are five frame portals with a centre-to-centre spacing of approximately 1820 mm. These portals are comprised of a pair of 38 mm SHS uprights with a 125x65 mm c-purlin sitting on top, Figure 2. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Figure 2. There is a small angle bracket that is bolted to the upright and welded to the purlin. There is also a 400x25x5 mm stiffener bolted to the upright and to the purlin. The uprights appear to be just sunk into the slab, Figure 3. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Figure 3. The roof sheeting is tek screwed into the purlins, Figure 4. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Figure 4. The portals are joined together by 70x45 mm timbers on the floor, middle and near the ceiling, Figure 5. Or is there some other way it should be done? Thanks, Clueless Living in Kambah, ACT (Tuggeranong Community Council). Re: Flat roof to a-frame garage conversion 2Oct 15, 2024 4:29 am You would need to run edge roof beams between the steel posts to support the trusses. May be you could use the existing main steel roof beams for that if design allows or just use new timber roof edge beams. You need to pay attention to bracing of roof trusses and posts. A qualified engineer is required to help with the design. Re: Flat roof to a-frame garage conversion 3Oct 15, 2024 6:09 pm Hi Eng. B A, thanks for the response. Eng. B A 2Oct 15, 2024 4:29 amEng. B A You would need to run edge roof beams between the steel posts to support the trusses Is that not what I've got? I've got three horizontal timbers that run the length of the shed on both sides of the shed, you can see them in Figure 2 (top timber shown at the top of the photo) and Figure 4 (shows all three timbers). There is one that runs along near the top of the posts, one just under the centre point, and one on the floor. Eng. B A A qualified engineer is required to help with the design. Understood thanks. Is that usually expensive? Living in Kambah, ACT (Tuggeranong Community Council). Re: Flat roof to a-frame garage conversion 4Oct 16, 2024 7:07 pm You would need bigger than those girts you have. The engineer cost shouldn’t be much as they will only design the roof beams and bracing for you. The trusses design are normally done by the manufacturer. Re: Flat roof to a-frame garage conversion 5Oct 17, 2024 5:12 pm Okay thanks, will see about contacting an engineer. The other thing I'm concerned about is the slab. It has cracked pretty significantly and some areas of the shed are at different levels and orientations than others. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ These have been here since we bought the house 5 years ago, I'm not sure if the slab is still moving or not. I guess that this could cause issues down the line for the structure if it hasn't settled? Living in Kambah, ACT (Tuggeranong Community Council). Re: Flat roof to a-frame garage conversion 6Oct 17, 2024 5:43 pm Generally the shed slab is non-structural floating slab. Those slabs need control joints at 3.0m maximum spacing or the slab would create ones in the form of cracks. Posts would have own pad or pier footings. I’m not sure if this is your case though. You need to check your structural plans or have the slab and footings scanned. Re: Flat roof to a-frame garage conversion 7Oct 17, 2024 6:11 pm Thanks very much for your help BA.
