Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 04, 2008 10:05 pm Hope this is no silly question. But this question brought in a lot of answers from my friends and got me confused, really. I have a big rectangular family photo frame to hang. I just want to know if there is such a thing as appropriate room or walls for hanging personal photos. A friend of mine says no to dining area. Someone said not on bathrooms, which, I may say, I agree. I know that this can be a personal thing, but, I might discover some "proper decorum"with regards to hanging pictures
cheers, Hannah Re: Best Wall to Hang Family Portraits/Pictures 2Nov 04, 2008 10:17 pm I don't think there is any 'right' place to hang pictures although I wouldn't be a fan of pictures in the bathroom either. Maybe it depends a little on the photos, if they are more formal, then they may quite suit a place like the dining room, more casual photos may look more at place in a more casual space? Re: Best Wall to Hang Family Portraits/Pictures 3Nov 05, 2008 6:12 am Hi acm
Family photos as Sharee said, its your own home so you can put anything you want on the walls But since you are asking...Family photos can look great in any room but it all depends on how they are framed and the 'type' of picture it is. For example, your wedding photo from 1988 (great perms back then )may have looked great at the time but maybe a little bit out of date for the main living room so prehaps some where less public. (no offence to any one that loves their official wedding portrait ) Also, kid photos are always beutiful but just check the framing you have...a new updated modern frame can revieve a older photo. My friend has put every photo in her house in modern white frames...looks absolutely stunning. Instead of photos looking dated, they look like pieces of art work all along her wall. As for your big family photo, anywhere is fine as long as it is hung at eye level and maybe grouped with other photos, furniture etc. Living, dinning, passage way, family room are all appropriate IMHO Why would your friend say no to the dinning area...is it a feng shu reason? Mrs B Re: Best Wall to Hang Family Portraits/Pictures 4Nov 05, 2008 7:45 am I have to agree: I would not hang a large framed photo of my family in the bathroom
If it is a large frame I guess you want it somewhere taking pride of place - can't see anything wrong with dining room myself, or family room, lounge, even a prominent wall in the hallway, as an entry feature. PS: never mind my wedding photos from 1986, what about my black and white baby photo from 1963?? ( its on dressing table in my bedroom ) Re: Best Wall to Hang Family Portraits/Pictures 5Nov 05, 2008 7:51 am I have to agree with Mrs B,
When we moved into this house I replace all the wooden frames with white ones and they look great! Hang them anywhere you want - its your house you have to look at them all the time Paula Re: Best Wall to Hang Family Portraits/Pictures 6Nov 05, 2008 7:57 am I think I'll be having a photo wall of family photos in the hall or in the upstairs lounge room.
I think I would keep family photos away from the dining room, just for my personal taste, however feng shui does suggest that paintings etc in the dining room should be of food or other good fortune objects as the dining room is where the family is 'nourished'. A mirror opposite the dining table is a common recommendation to symbolically double the quantity of food. (yours truly included) but can you go on a symbolic diet? sorry, I just can't take this feng shu stuff seriously Re: Best Wall to Hang Family Portraits/Pictures 8Nov 05, 2008 8:17 am LOL Helyn, I need one of those symbolic diets!
I quite like the feng shui principals, a lot of it to me is common sense, and makes a home flow nicely and feel good. Whatever the reason, I really like a mirror across from a dining table. ( its on dressing table in my bedroom ) Hi Helen, Baby photos from the sixities are considered 'classics'(by me hehe) There is something very nostalgic about baby photos from that era...as I said my friend has photos dating back to the 40's but all in white frames...So bring on the 1960's photos I say Mrs B Re: Best Wall to Hang Family Portraits/Pictures 11Nov 05, 2008 8:48 pm I love my photos... I have a photo of all family members & close friends..
However in saying that, in our new house I will be more careful were i will be putting them. I am planning on hanging most of our photos in a large clump / group on our rumpus room wall. Then I will select a few to scatter throughout the house. nesspop Why am I covered in feathers Re: Best Wall to Hang Family Portraits/Pictures 12Nov 06, 2008 9:50 am nesspop I love my photos... Since its a casual family area, for me, its suitable to hang family photos. Photos do bring a lot of emotions and I do think it matters where we hang them cheers, Hannah Re: Best Wall to Hang Family Portraits/Pictures 13Nov 06, 2008 3:02 pm Kinda related to the question but DW was at a friends place and they had family photos hung using a system available from a company in Geelong...basically a top rail with nylon threads...can be stainless if you are after that look....looked pretty classy...and a good way of getting lots of photos hanging straight.
It's similar to this system from a company in Sydney...DW's going to find out the company name which I think does mail order. http://www.fxhangingsystems.com.au/index.htm Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Best Wall to Hang Family Portraits/Pictures 14Nov 06, 2008 4:13 pm TDL, I use to use that system at work and its awesome. We would have people come into work all the time and ask if we sold the system but we didn't as it was for commercial use only at that stage.
I have to say the pic you have of them being double hung is an absolute nightmare to get right as the toggles used to secure the nylon in place were very bulky and just when you thought you had it at the right height on both sides you would stand back and one side would drop slightly. Strong fingers required for those. If anyone loves lots of pics to hang I would highly recommend this system. We would even hang a 10kg mirror from them. I will be hanging my pics in the hall. Ours are all framed in the same wood, similar to that which will be laid on the floors and one wedding pic for our bedroom(just to remind us who we are married to ) and one fun baby pic in the boys bedroom. So he knows what he looks like. Re: Best Wall to Hang Family Portraits/Pictures 15Nov 06, 2008 8:55 pm gweluphome and one fun baby pic in the boys bedroom. So he knows what he looks like. On the same theme as this, a friend of mine who has lots of family living o/s and interstate has a collage of all the grandparents, aunties, uncles and cousins in frames for her DS with their names on them, so he sees their faces a lot and is familiar with them. I think it's a great idea. TDL, with those hanging systems, how do you hang them from the top? Would you have to put in some small nails or something? If you didn't have a picture rail? It looks great! Re: Best Wall to Hang Family Portraits/Pictures 16Nov 06, 2008 9:03 pm Donuts.....Sorry to but in TDL but I know the ones we used were screwed into the wall about every meter of the length. It would have to sit under the cornice. DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Ditto 3M Claw, expensive but best thing I've used to date. I put two of the 11kg ones in for a 12kg mirror on the wall, and its been great for 4 years now. 4 2160 Regardless of wall hung toilet or floor pan toilet your feet will be right on drain, seems to me the waste should not be in that location given the design.
