Laundry Floor Help Please!

hi. We recently had an extension built to our home via a Victorian company. The laundry is basically a niche in the hallway. We had tiles on the plan, but once the Tassy Oak floor was being laid, the carpenter did the flooring all the way to the wall and it looked great. What we were left with, was 490mm from the cupboards to the edge of the nice - and the Building Surveyor is saying we MUST tile this as it was on the plan. If we want to keep it as floorboard we need to get a "Peformance Solution". We didn't tile as it became obvious that a strip of tiles would forever be a trip point. And I do not understand what difference that would make as there is and never was a floor drain in that space, and any water would just flow onto the floorboards anyway. I'm yet to find a $$ on how much a performance solution will cost, so I'm reaching out to see if anyone has any advice around this... ?
