Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Cut metal with a mitre saw? 3Dec 28, 2023 3:02 pm thanks. I asked because I googled a bit and found a place where they were talking about rpm's for metal cutting as against wood and blah, blah... and sort of made the water murky... That'll be excellent. I use a big angle grinder in a kind of cut off saw cradle thing and the problem with it is that I can't get it to cut 45 degrees good. Not enough room in the jig. Whereas the mitre saw, of course, is made for just that. Off to Bunnings then.... Re: Cut metal with a mitre saw? 4Dec 28, 2023 3:10 pm I'm guessing you mean your mitre saw is 5000 rpm and not 500 rpm. "They" are correct re RPM. Ensure your new metal cutting blade max RPM (see the label) is at least as high as your Icon mitre saw max RPM. Also ensure you don't have a large amount of dust stuck within your mitre saw because the sparks from cutting metal may ignite it. Well they seemed to be saying the two required rpm's were very different. And I can't vary the rpm of my saw. So okay I can get a blade. What about the existing aluminum blade I have to hand here. Would that do for cutting a couple of dozen mitres on galv rect hollow section fence rail? 1.6mm wall it looks like to me. Re: Cut metal with a mitre saw? 7Dec 28, 2023 6:25 pm gommeqld No, a blade for aluminium won't survive the first cut. You need a blade for cutting mild steel. I was just in Bunnings and came back. Looks like the cheapest and therefore most suss was $45 and 'good' looks to be around $100. Looked on ebay and - strange thing - they seem to have lost all their bargain price China stuff - everything was more expensive than Bunnings. Might stick to using the grinder for a while. But good to have all the info. .... Re: Cut metal with a mitre saw? 8Dec 29, 2023 4:28 pm What I have noticed, especially on eBay is that some people are selling products at a massive markup and much more expensive than retail shops. It's like the seller is betting that the person thinks that because they are purchasing via eBay it will be a bargain Re: Cut metal with a mitre saw? 9Dec 29, 2023 5:24 pm MarkusjOZ What I have noticed, especially on eBay is that some people are selling products at a massive markup and much more expensive than retail shops. It's like the seller is betting that the person thinks that because they are purchasing via eBay it will be a bargain Yep. I have had the same thought many times. And they pull all kinds of tricks to get first on the list so's the unwary just buy the first thing that comes up. Many don't even think to opt for 'lowest price + packaging'. And have you seen now how they advertise a price range instead of the price? So you want some dumb thing - a pen, say - and they advertise at $1. But when you go to buy you have to choose a colour. and any colour available costs $10 ? That kind of thing? We've sure learned a lot about how crooked some people can be in recent years haven't we? And still learning. How about our governments? Who knew? Total, absolute, committed, unapologetic, remorseless liars... phew... Re: Cut metal with a mitre saw? 11Dec 29, 2023 6:58 pm MarkusjOZ I have seen similar on Gumtree as well - My personal favourite is when the item is around market price but shipping is crazy expensive Yep, that's a good trick, much used on ebay too I think.. The good days seem to have gone. A Chinese friend tells me everything is different in China now. Factories are closing and stuff. I think their govt was subsidising their sales: sell cheap to us overseas and their govt made up the difference for them so's they could stay in business. Or it was a govt business anyway. And why run at a loss like that? For foreign currency. To get Dollars from overseas. But now China is into BRICS and they're dumping their US Treasury bonds apparently... all stuff like that. That's what I hear/read. How much sense there is in it I don't know. I don't understand that stuff too well. Whatever. Bit sad though. Going well there for a while weren't we?.
