Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 04, 2023 11:45 am Hi All! Our builder has just sent through the working drawings from the cabinet maker for our custom kitchen. We have noticed that the drawer depths on our 750mm deep bench are only 500mm deep. We queried this with the builder, this is their response: "The cabinetmaker is working through all the items, and I am hoping to have this back with all pricing on Monday. In the meantime, they have advised that if you would like to increase the depth of the drawers above standard (500mm), then they need to upgrade to much more expensive components, as the standard runner system isn’t manufactured deeper than 500mm. So, the following pricing would apply: 12x Drawers up to 650 deep will cost an extra $2,892 (incl GST) This would be the 3x 4 drawer banks along the back wall of the Kitchen - the drawer under the Oven can only go to 600mm deep, due to the higher side runners required only being made that deep. 4x Drawers up to 600 deep will cost an extra $656 (incl GST) This would be the drawer under the oven, and 3x drawers under and to the left of the Dishwasher (the drawer under the sink cannot be made deeper, due to the plumbing) If you would like to go ahead with the drawer upgrade, please advise and I will draft a variation." We are shocked that this was not included in the quote we received through the builder over a year ago. It has never been asked or mentioned, and this is the first time we have seen a detailed drawing to notice it. Is it normal that drawer depths stay at 500mm when bench depths are increased? Thanks for any advice Re: Kitchen Quote advice please! 2Aug 04, 2023 4:04 pm 500 is standard and it wasnt mentioned to you because its not standard. 500 deep drawers are plenty deep for 99.9% of people. cut out a 500 deep envelope from cardboard and put it up against a 600 deep envelope. The extra 10cm nets you a couple of cups, maybe a litle more room for pots, but its not like you will fit materially more stuff in those same drawers with teh extra 10cm Re: Kitchen Quote advice please! 3Aug 04, 2023 4:57 pm it's a common issue with "standard" things, unless you specifically ask you don't get told what the "standard" is. if you do decide to increase it, keep in mind that you need the same space to be available in front of the drawer to be able to fully open it. so might not work out well if you have narrow passages Re: Kitchen Quote advice please! 4Aug 05, 2023 1:44 am As others have said standard kitchens have 500ish drawer runners. Depending on brands used they may be slightly longer or shorter but around abouts 500 is typical. The question I would ask is, what is the brand of the standard drawer hardware and what is the longer drawer hardware. Your upgrade cost for the 12 drawers is $241 per drawer. If it's going from a more cost effective hardware solution to a top tier hardware then the cost is maybe understandable but if you were already getting the top tier hardware then the upgrade shouldn't be that much. Remembering that the builder will be putting an extra 20% on top of what the cabinet maker is charging. Bare minimum. I've seen almost 100% markup in some cases. Its funny first house i built, i opted to not pay the stupid premium on soft close mechanisms. Was over 4k for the kitchen. The mechanisms ive since seen at bunnings (haffelle, Haffe or something) and they look like rubbish. Current house, blum soft close everything in every part f the house as standard in the base price. I was being kind to the builder. With the amount charged for the upgrade the builder is probably charging closer to 100% margin. There are a few variables as I mentioned in my initial post but I would love to be able to charge that sort of upgrade price.
