Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 29, 2008 1:34 am Hi all,
Bought a small unit and got one of my customers to help me renovate the place (he's a builder).. it was a pretty big job for a small unit. but anyway, half the work has been done and i'm sure i've paid for more that what has already been done as what's left is about $8,000 for the job. there's a $13,000 kitchen, $1500 worth of tiling in his "variation", painting for the whole unit, $3000 for 2 wardrobes, $700 insulation and prob a few small things. i've had the unit since mid july 08. reno started prob start of aug 08. the place has had some work done up until about end of aug/start of sept and then he's asking for more money. on average i paid about $5-7,000 per wk and in total paid $41,500. the whole things was sps to cost $60,000, less a few items that i went to buy myself like carpets and other things and took off a few things i didn't need to have done anymore and worked out to about $49,000. He's done nothing in the past1.5-2 months and he's just asking for more money when i get a hold of him. otherwise, he doesn't pick up, doesn't return calls. makes appointments with me to "discuss" money (though it's all on paper how much) but doesn't rock up (6 times now). every month the unit is not finished, i'm $4,000 out of pocket. I don't want to wait any more. he's taking me for a ride and i'm not liking it. I need to take some drastic action. if i hadn't paid him so much, i'd just get someone else to finish the job. Is there some company i can call to tell them like HIA or Master Builders Association? Anyone got some good advice for me? =( Re: Problems with builders - what can u do? 2Oct 29, 2008 5:46 pm Hi HH,
welcome to the forum. I'm not sure I can help you. Try the Fair trading if you are in NSW or equivalent. Do you have a HIA contract? Were there any home insurance (as it was more than $12000)? You may need to get some legal advice from solicitor. You should only pay the builder after certain things are completed according to contract. I wouold not pay anymore until it is completed. Good luck. Re: Problems with builders - what can u do? 3Nov 02, 2008 8:11 pm Not much you can do without building contracts and permits, its the old saying always get everything in writing and never ever just trust a builder freind because as you found out it can quickly go sour. Either the project was under estimated or no cost control, either way a building consultant expert in building disputes will give you advice to make claims against the contractor but again with written agreements its tough. Lawyers probably will not help much except spend more of your money I suppose ! but i do sympithise with you. I am not a brick expert, but rendering would be 1 option, it would be costly to do the entire house though.... 2 6673 Hi all, has anyone been ask to do the weeds in their property while in the middle of build?
