Our builder used the same demolision contractor for the asbestos removal. After missing some asbestos, they have turned around and said they want a 5 figure additional charge for getting rid of contaminated waste. I felt like I was being scammed, but I needed the job to move forward, so I told them to go ahead on the condition of receipts being provided.
Fast forward a bit and the plates on the receipts don't match the trucks that have left the site, as such I refused to pay, but now I'm being pressured to pay regardless. Anyone have any idea about how things work in this space? and can anyone give an opinion on a fair way to move forward from this?

Registering asbsestos consignments is law in NSW. Some other states have similar requirements. Contact the waste disposal facility CFO and mention your concern that their official weighbridge receipts may have been alterred to squeeze the extra $5k from you and ask them to check their audit trail and verify. They will be well aware of the common KDR asbestos stings and the environmental risks of asbestos dumping and should assist here. Refuse to pay until the correct and independently verifiable proof of consignment locations, volume and cost is provided. If they hold you to ransom with the asbestos clearance certificate find another consultant to issue it. Keep all communications with the demolition company strictly in writing. If they harass or threaten you or your property engage the police.
