If tiles go to the ceiling they go behind the cornice.
The order would be ceiling-tiles-cornice and finally painting.
If the ceiling is square set (no cornice) then the tiles are cut to the ceiling and gapped.

The gap can be adjusted so it's tighter. You can definitely set up corner cabinets to have the same gap as standard doors.
