Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 06, 2022 7:14 am I'm in Canberra and am planning on getting new insulated garage doors. Will this be enough insulation to keep heat in in winter? I want to use the garage as a living space and will only rarely open the insulated doors. Are insulated panel doors equivalent to windows to retain heat? Keen to hear from those in the know or who have insulated garage doors.. whats your experience been like? thanks! Re: Insulated garage doors. Garage as living space in canber 2Jan 03, 2023 9:25 am Garage doors are not designed to be like windows, so the biggest challenge I guess would be covering the air gaps without hindering to its operation. There are a lot of clever draught seal products online for garage, however I wouldn't bet it would be as comfortable as internal space. Not to mention, if this is your intention then you must organise to insulate garage walls and ceiling space, as it is not normally done by the builder. Re: Insulated garage doors. Garage as living space in canber 3Jan 03, 2023 10:23 am We have a garage door that I have fitted foam insulation panels and seals around the door. I measured temps outside and inside before fitting and basically the insulation made about 5 degrees difference to not having any insulation in It's a west facing garage so cops full heat in the afternoons here. 35 degrees outside and the garage is 28 inside Our roof space over the garage is insulated with 3.5 Batts. Exterior walls are single brick. Not sure if purchasing one of the manufacturers insulated doors will give any better results than my after market kit but I'd suggest if you're going to try to use it as a living space you'll need to air con it and as liongl says insulate the walls and ceiling as well Re: Insulated garage doors. Or you can always consider an electric car! Good questions but the best answer will be obtained by visiting (ie: interviewing) a couple of house designers and/or builders and ask them.
