Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Finishing project after builder enters liquidation 2Aug 15, 2022 10:52 am Adam Waycott Hello, The builder for an addition and alternation project on my home has just gone into liquidation (after 3 stressful months of them abandoning the site with no communication) and I am now in the process of submitting the claim with the insurance company to finally complete the job. We are close to lock-up stage and in Melbourne. Hey Adam Waycott Welcome to the forum There would be tens of thousands in a similar situation Make sure you have your build professionally independently assessed and send it to the insurance co. Adam Waycott I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with appointing a builder to complete a half finished reno? The insurance company will have a fixed claim pay out figure in mind. Unlike your original building contract the process is now the opposite. Builders are told there is no scope to price gouge extra changes/claims, so there is a limited amount if your previous contract has been front loaded and the stage valuations don't stack up.. Adam Waycott Any thoughts on if it is better / easier to use an insurance company appointed builder over finding a new builder myself? Any tips or experience to ensure any and all defects are captured in the scope of work for the claim? Make sure the drawings, engineering, defects, scope of works, (3) quotes etc Are agreed to by all parties.... including the insurance company. Because of the high demand ,lack of supplies/trades be prepared to wait. Here in WA my neighbours have been told it is a 2 year wait... unless you want to vary the original contract ie, change materials/ trades, prices and finishes to a lessor value ... ? I would be interested to find any links or advice on line from the insurance ombudsman.
