Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 12, 2022 6:25 pm I’ve been using Intergrain UltraClear (water based) on my external merbau posts and railing for ~5 years. I find the product ok – it’s easy to apply, though seems to require a number of coats to provide sufficient protection (along with recoating every 18 months of so) and the merbau pigment in the timber still seems to fade over time through UV. I do however have an issue that has occurred with recent heavy and ongoing rain in that a number of areas have started to detach from the timber and bubble (thought the integrity of the cover remains intact i.e. the bubble has not been pierced). Picture attached for context. I’ve spoken to an Intergrain rep about this and they seem to think that it is likely from some contaminants in the timber that was brought to the surface through the high humidity from the rain. Their suggestion was to scrape away the bubbles, give the area a light sand (120 grit), wash with Intergrain Timber Cleaner and then recoat. Few questions about this: - Has anyone come across this issue with Intergain Ultraclear bubbling but the integrity of the surface remaining intact? - Is the UltraClear product really that sensitive that it needs a wash with Intergrain Timber Cleaner even after a sand of previously coated timber? - Any tips as to how to make the repaired area not as noticeable in terms of the depth of layers being thinner as compared to the older, non-repaired areas with years of layers?
